BERLIN (Dow Jones)--Airbus (ABI.YY) will postpone the delivery of the world's biggest airliner, the A380, until late 2006, reports Financial Times Deutschland. The airline maker said it negotiated a new agreement with its first customer, Singapore Airlines (S55.SG), for the plane.

Well, first flight was late. I think that since everyone is in awe of the first flight, it was the right time to announce this. Not a good news...

I remember that Airbus was really behind with cabin fittings. Maybe that's part of it.

Was this an issue with Airbus or SQ? Could it have been airport modifications?

Well, that's a bummer. But I can't think of any Boeing projects that ran on time, either... except maybe derivatives. The 777 was late to United, that's for sure.

Very troubling so soon after the 1st flight. Any word on damage or unusual findings afterwards? Little known fact but during the Spruce Goose's 1st flight (that little jaunt Howard Hughes took during high-speed taxi tests) the aircraft sustained so much damage that it took more than a year to fix.

Not really a surprise, given the delay in getting it flying. The test programme was originally reckoned to require four prototypes over 15 months - and I don't suppose that that can be speeded up much.

Hardly fatal news - bad news for the airlines, though, the Christmas period is high season (summer and annual holidays) down here, and most of the first batch of A380s are expected to be deployed on the Kangaroo Route. With bookings often having to be up to two months ahead at that time of year, the airlines might miss a complete season.

Funny, the original FTD reports does NOT talk about a "late 2006" delivery, but only about delivery in the second half of 2006. The yahoo guys should better take some more German lessons before producing false summaries.  knockout

Btw, hardly any news. Third or fourth quarter 2006 delivery has been mentioned several times already.

But except for you and some aviation fans only few know that. And no matter whether it's only "second", "third" or "tenth" in size, it was still an amazing sight.

Could this have anything to do with the legal problems surrounding the flight software.

Does anyone know anymore about that problem?

You would have thought the delays would be down to how long it Takes to get the certificate of airworthiness and I heard it needs 1500 hrs to receive it so if they get it over and done with quickly wont the delay be reduced to say mid 2006 just a guess but who knows

No. We have this deviation where we just imagine that we're wearing lederhosen. Much more practical... We are not too concerned what Udo is wearing.

It's the largest a/c that has the economics, range and reliability required of an airliner. I for one do not see lawn chairs on the deck of an AN-225 as a suitable alternative, do you?

What a surprise that you should think so... NOT!

It's sooo not "troubling". This happens all the time. I'm amazed large projects like this ever even vaguely hit the right year when it comes to scheduling. So so many things have to be planned months and years in advance, and they all have to mesh. Like the MS Project sheet from hell x 10.

Not surprising - brand new plane, new type, new everything. Of course there's going to problems, delays and hiccups, but better to sort it all out now rather than a year or two into production.

i'm still curious what the "problem" is.....any airbus insiders who know what the delay? as stated, it might not even be with airbus, but the interiour manufacturers....(wow..i'm defending airbus).... eek

Well did you guys see how hard that thing landed? I thought airbuses were supposed to land nicely, but if everyone of the A380's landings are like that they are not going to last long with that much stress on them.
