Dept Of Transport - "only 3 Types Of Plane"!

Mon May 02, 2005 4:24 pm

I have just been reading a UK rail industry magazine. In it - the UK Transport Minister says that railways should be like the airlines - who operate with three basic types of plane!

Now this may be me being naive but could anyone enlighten me on the "three basic types of plane" that he was referring to?

Here are some of my suggestions:-

1) Either two engines, three engines or four engines
2) Boeing, Airbus + everyone else
3) Big Planes, Small Planes and those in between

Am I being too technical by saying this but I can think of A300, A310, A340, B737, B757, B747, Fokker 100, CRJ 200, Bae146, Dash 8..........but to name a few

the UK Transport Minister says...

Yeah - that's the point. He's the Transport Minister - there's no correlation with him knowing anything about transport... I mean John Prescott was the transport minister at one point - need I say more...?  sarcastic

Perhaps he just means a plane for 3 markets e.g :
Shorthaul/Domestic
European
TransAtlantic/Longhaul

Just because a person is "in charge" and can say things like "Mission Accomplished" does NOT mean he knows everything.

Trust me, education experts in the state of California have spent their entire careers getting as far away from children as they possibly, so they can become "experts" on children. There are more adminstrators in education than there are teachers, yet somehow they are supposed to be smarter than teachers and know what works in a classroom.

It sounds like this person hasn't flown in quite a while, and has no idea how airports function. I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up for his flight ten minutes before take-off and was thoroughly surprised to not be let on board.

Aren't we taking the minister's statement a little bit too literally here?

Just because he said "three" types of aircraft, I strongly suspect he was simply illustrating a point. If you're trying to determine exactly what types he meant, then I'd argue that you're probably unable to see the forest for the trees.

You let the working class on planes nowadays? What's the country coming to?

He must mean choppers, fixed wing and hot air balloons.

Certainly not to be taken seriously... I was only playing with prevailing public sentiment.
