Any News On The B737-900X?

Tue May 03, 2005 2:28 am

On several occassions over the past few years, we have heard reports and rumors that Boeing was close to launching the B737-900X or B737-900ER, a heavier and longer-range version of the 737-900 which, aside from adding range to the type, would allow increased seating in high density layouts due to revised emergency exits. Other changes and improvements were planned. The idea was that the improved 739 could help plug the gap in Boeing's model lineup created by the end of 757 production. Alaska, and one or more of the European charter carriers, were usually mentioned as candidates to launch the new sub-type.

Any news? We have not heard anything in months? Is this project dead? There is a lot of talk lately about Boeing getting ready to announce the 737e, the successor to the 737NG - if that is the case, will the 737-900X simply be forgotten?

JL is interested as well. It's a matter of when, not whether, Boeing goes forward with this variant.

Boeing/Mike Blair had announced last week at a press conference that there was "sufficient interest in the current 737 program to not announce a 737 successor at this time"; so I dont think they are ready to announce the 737 NNG yet. So, therefore I do believe that we will see a launch of the 900X sometime this year.

All that having been said, you can bet they are already doing some preliminary work on the 737 replacement including new 787 technology.

Not only that. A news release on their WWW site mentions the -900X

But we have heard nothing on this from Boeing.
