Top International Gateways To The U.S.

Tue May 03, 2005 3:11 am

Here is a fresh list from Aviation Daily of the top 10 (the list is actually 50) international gateways TO the United States during the first week of April.

Toronto is the top city by frequency while Heathrow is the top in weekly seats:

1. Toronto: 1,663 weekly trips, 51 cities served.
2. Montreal: 589 weekly trips, 25 cities.
3. Vancouver: 543 weekly trips, 18 cities
4. Heathrow: 509 weekly trips, 14 cities (but number 1 in weekly seats at 154,490)
5. Nassau: 505 weekly trips, 20 cities.
6. Mexico City: 473 weekly trips, 22 cities
7. Cancun: 408 weekly trips, 34 cities
8. Tokyo-Narita: 366 weekly trips, 17 cities
9. Frankfurt: 272 weekly trips, 20 cities
10. Paris-CDG: 261 weekly trips, 14 cities.

Do you know what the position of AMS is in the list?

Here's a little further trivia:

LAX is the #1 USA gateway to "Australasia". Let's see how many posts it takes for someone to figure out the #2 USA gateway  Wink

Out of curiosity, how does it work that LHR is > YYZ for seats? Is that because of all the RJ traffic across the border?

I'm not even remotely surprised that YYZ is number one in frequencies given AC's use of YYZ as a transborder hub.

To answer questions above:

Top weekly seats:

LHR -- as stated above
YYZ -- 132,554
NRT -- 124,558
FRA -- 81,537
CDG -- 73,204
MEX -- 65,417
CUN -- 65,316
YVR -- 55,857
AMS -- 53,645

AMS is number 15 in weekly trips with 206.

I would imagine LHR wins in seats because of the sheer capacity difference between a 744 and lots of RJs, A319s, 737s, etc.

I have a better question..

What would make some good, new US international gateways..

The top 5 for that.. these gateways could already be in use but not heavily traveled, or they could be brand new.. (by this, I mean it has to be less traffic than what arrives at Orlando Sanford)...

What fraction of the LHR seats to/from the US are provided by non-US or UK carriers using fifth freedom rights in the US or UK?

Interesting: GRU comes first in the Southern Hesmiphere, and 16th overall. What is the gateway no. 2 and no. 3 in the Souther Hemisphere?

According to the Aviation Daily list, which was produced by Eclat Consulting, Santiago and Lima follow GRU in the southern hemisphere.

What fraction of the LHR seats to/from the US are provided by non-US or UK carriers using fifth freedom rights in the US or UK?

from LHR:

47.1% BA
17.2% AA
16.6% VS
14.2% UA
02.7% AI
01.7% NZ
00.6% KU

OK, what fraction of LHR traffic departing to or arriving from the US consists of traffic with an origin or destination other than the UK? In other words, what fraction of traffic is transiting through or making connections at LHR to get to the US from another country or from another country to the US?

I think that it is interesting that AA is the #1 U.S. carrier to seven of the top ten international-originating markets for the United States (by frequency), as measured by number of available seats in the market:

1. Toronto
2. Montreal
4. Heathrow
5. Nassau
6. Mexico City
7. Cancun
10. Paris

AA only trails in YVR (behind United), NRT (behind United and Northwest) and Frankfurt (behind United and Delta).

Anyone have a list of the top US cities that receive international flights? (I guess that list would be identical to the top cities for departing international flights).

In terms of international passengers...

By airport:
1) JFK
2) LAX
3) MIA
(the figures are all pretty close, and they switch positions often. In 2002, for example, it was MIA>JFK>LAX)

By metro:
1) New York City/Newark
2) Miami/Lauderdale
3) Los Angeles/Ontario

Do you have a similar breakdown for YYZ?

During the summer months, Vancouver is even more of a gateway to the US.

The number of flights/week to the US jumps up to just over 650.
The number of seats/week jumps to just over 65,300.

In terms of frequency I think AA is behind CO when it comes to Narita, CO flies from NRT to..

Guam 2 767-400, 1 737-800
IAH 1 777
EWR 1 777

AA flies to ORD, DFW, JFK and LAX for a total of 4 daily flights?. Do they still fly to San Jose?

In both frequency and capacity, AA has CO beat out of NRT. AA, this summer, will be flying a total of 42 weekly 777s from NRT to ORD, LAX, SJC, JFK, and twice daily to DFW. CO, by contrast, will fly three times daily NRT-GUM (two 762s, 1 738) and once daily each with a 777 to IAH and EWR.

AA total number of frequencies: 42 weekly
AA total number of seats: 1,422 weekly

CO total number of frequencies: 35
CO total number of seats: 1,070 weekly
