Marketing Philisophies

To all: As a relatively recent participant in the Forum, I am always amazed at how strongly people feel about A3XX(feasibility, potential,ect) and its competitor, the 747 and its potential developments. While I understand that much of that feeling has to do with one's personal circumstances(citizenship, employment,ect), I wonder why there has not been much time devoted to exploring how Boeing and Airbus can come to such different conclusions about the a/c marketplace and the planes needed to serve it. After all, they both talk to the same airlines.
I realize that this post may take us back to ground which has been previously debated, but again, I am relatively new here. If this bothers you, please pass it by; if not, I welcome your thoughts and insights!

Airbus needed a way to get a leg-over on Boeing. Since the latter was already known for its high-quality aircraft, Airbus countered with ungodly amounts of technology. IFE, Drop-down screens, fully FBW aircraft that more or less fly themselves.....

The small commercial airliners (737, A319/20) are not very profitable compared to products like the 747. Airbus wants a larger part of the higher margin aircraft, so they have more incentive to take risks and enter the market. Boeing has recently spent a significant amount of money on there new FAIT tooling for the 747 production line, and hopes to produce the fleet for many more years. When Boeing first produced the 747 they were a bold risk taker, now they seem more inclined to only react to Airbus. Eventually a new large aircraft will be produced, as great at the 747 is it can't live forever, the question is whether now is the time. The advantage for Airbus is that it would be new technology, it may make it as the large aircraft of the future. (There is a particular need for a large freighter which is now the 747's major markets). Many people predicted Boeing was wrong with the 747 as they do with the 3xx, only time will tell.

Airbus is hungry for the top, the 747 is more than aging and the 777 is nothing to take serious. Since more and more airlines benefit from comunality and economies which is offered by Airbus, the logical step is towards A3XX. Boeing seems to be asleep, wonder where all the money went which they earned while beeing undisputed leader in civil-AC-market.
