Thai BKK-JFK 5 Hours Early

Tue May 03, 2005 2:38 pm

TG 790 appears to have landed at 1:14 AM, hours ahead of the scheduled time of 6:35....I guess they must have had great winds. Anybody know how they are doing on loads?

Wow they might not loose as much money as they projected..

Do they have to "repay" this in Headwinds on the return...Good Luck to them, for trying something new...not Always easy in a Government (Military) run operation...

When I flew NRT-JFK, albeit on my FS, I arrived into JFK 2.5 or so hours early.  Wink

No they do not have to. Pockets of jet streams (as these high speed winds are called) are only found in the Northern Hemisphere at certain times of the year. And they are westerly in direction during winter or something to that effect. So they would probably fly over the Atlantic one way, and over the Pacific on the return just to ride the stream.

Excuse me, but if this was true then they would have broken the soundbarrier... Being 5 hours early on a 15 hour flight.... Mach 1.4 ?

What might have happened is that the system is showing the ETA for the "destination" originally listed in the flight plan - the time should update once the flight plan is re-filed for JFK.

Wow, that couldn't have been too convenient for the pax to arrive at 1:14 AM... Is it possible, with proper winds, for groundspeed to break the sound barrier?

Airspeed and Groundspeed are different. But yeah 5 hours early seems a little unbelievable.

It's either a time conversion issue or else the flight crew re-filed the flight plan en route.

That looks like they were 20 minutes early and someone screwed up and crossed Zulu (GMT) with Local (EDT). Hence, the 5 hour difference

It's really cool that 3 A345 operators fly them into the New York Area now... that makes 3/4... SQ, EK, TG (out of SQ, EK, TG, AC). ^__^

About how long had the 345 been airborne when you snapped that photo? It's a beautiful shot!

I've heard that if the flight is getting good tail winds, the flight crew will reduce power to conserve fuel while maintaining a constant groundspeed. Makes sense given today's fuel costs.

Last winter I flew NGO-DTW and arrived at 9:00am 1.5 hours before scheduled arrival. The flight was suppose to be 11 hrs ended up being 9.5 hours. It was nice to get there early but sucked in the end as a snow storm kept us at DTW for 5 hours.

OK, jet streams in both hemispheres exist at ALL times of the year. They tend to be stronger in the winter months than the summer months in the respective winter/summer hemisphere. They tend to have a much longer E-W extent rather than N-S extent, so it would be very easy to catch one as a tail wind and then avoid it heading the other direction. I'm not sure how the math works out on the flying time, but I'd guess the absolute max tailwind they could pick up from a jet streak would be about 200 kts, and they'd only be flying with that much of a tailwind for a VERY short time. It's unlikely that they'd be flying for an extended period of time with a jet streak of over even 100 kts...not impossible, but highly unlikely.

Not long at all. See the map below, it's about where the "blue" plane is in this pic. Took off on 31L.

Forgot to add: Thanks everyone! Glad you enjoyed the photo.

N1120A looks to be correct. Flight tracker may have also gotten a little screwing with the plane flying in and out of radar coverage. I notice our flight explorer gets confused with international flight out of radar area. The times get botched up.

Plus, why would the crew not have slowed down with a 200 kts tailwind to conserve fuel. ERJ, good point. Also, why would the crew even want to get that early? No ground crews or agents to meet the flight, etc. If 1.0-1.5 hrs. can be saved from Japan or Hong Kong, your not going to save another 4 hours coming from BKK.
