RWY 28 Departure At STT

Just got back from STT into EWR on a CO 73G. We had what I thought was a very unusual departure from rwy 28 instead of rwy 10. Winds favored rwy 10, and all arrivals and other departures were from rwy 10.

We were totally full- not one seat left. My hunch was we were so heavy, the crew was concerned about the rate of climb with the higher terrain off rwy 10. Wanted to ask the crew about it after we arrived in EWR, but they were occupied.

To any STT experts here- how often does this occur, especially if the winds favor rwy 10?
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

The main reason your flight departed from rwy 28 even though winds favored rwy 10 (About 99% of the time the winds out of STT favor rwy 10), was more than likely because of a obstacle clearance. Taking off of rwy 10 you have according to the charts the main obstacle is the slope of the hill at the end of rwy 10. Depending on the weight and the climb rate calculated for your flight, it probably favored taking the tail wind penalty of taking off of rwy 28 vs. The minimum climb rate for rwy 28.

It's not really that unusual to see, not very often but no unusual. CO tends to use 28 quite often, every now and then NA uses it too. Everyone else tends to use 10 (All the other majors use either a 757 or one of the A320 family out of STT).

So what you're saying is that an A320 has a better climb rate than a 73G?  bomb   wink
