Global Traveler magazine printed a positive review of CO's BusinessFirst service in its April 2005 issue.

"Gate-to-gate, this was a top-notch flight experience highlighted by smooth, orderly and friendly service," the review said.

It talked about the Presidents Club experience, the boarding process and on-time departure, the inflight menu and cabin comfort.

"Cabin configuration, inflight entertainment and food service are all well and good, but it's Continental's flight crew that makes the airline stand apart from the rest," the article said.

The reporter took CO flight 40 on Oct. 9 to Rome (FCO). She returned Oct. 13 on CO flight 41.

The one thing I would like changed at CO is their inflight entertainment. A few months ago I flew on VS from LHR to JFK. The thing that stuck out the most, to me, was the entertainment system they had. Nice selection of movies and when I had to go to the bathroom I was able to put the movie on pause. Why doesn't CO have an entertainment system on par with that of VS ?

On-demand IFE, it's called. Watch it on demand, pause it on demand... Whatever your demand, the system can handle demands.
How demanding.
(cough cough, past my bedtime)
Anyhow, on-demand IFE systems are a rarity, particularly in the United States. USAirways has it on their A330s, and it's great. But Conti had PTVs in seats long before these on-demand systems became all the rage. And there's not much need to upgrade it now. Particularly when you consider the cost; they'd have to start all over with their IFE systems. WAY PRICEY. Especially when most of the competition (United, American, Delta) doesn't offer it. It just wouldn't justify the cost of ripping out ALL of the old components (tens of thousands of dollars worth) and replacing them with new ones.

I think many of the Asian carriers have gone this route, as well as the Middle East group. But not us.

Agree!.. CO is the best in the us, even in domestic Y!!
..they still offer all the amenities that the legacy used to offer: magazines, pillows, meals,,,and best of all... refurbished/new planes with very attentive staff!

I do love the ondemand IFE too. I tried them with TAM and CX. On the US airlines you need to be paying attention to see when the next cycle of movies is going to start. With ondemand, you relax more and watch movies whenever you want, therefore making it a more enjoyable flight  Smile

CO will be going AVOD on longhaul shortly, starting with the 75B fleet.

Have you received confirmation of this?

I was under the impression that the 757s would be progressively converted to a Matsushita system much like what is already installed on the 767/777 fleet. We usually have problems with the IFE system that is in place on the 75B currently, I guess due to age, and I suppose technology has made the system so obsolete that the time is right to replace it. I have heard conflicting reports that the Y cabin will get PTVs as well. I don't think it's out of the question.

I can assure you that we do not have a pressing need to replace the IFE system on our widebody fleet. In-service life for the system was supposed to be 10-12 years, and we are just barely into that on even our oldest aircraft. It would require a massive investment to replace the existing hardware and install a new system which arguably adds negligible value to the product.

Even though my seat is all the way at the pointy end, I personally would like to see us install our new BF seats on the 757/767s before they get AVOD. We selected that design back in '02 due in part to their compatibility with the rest of our fleet, and I think it would be nice to have a consistent product on all long haul flights

My guess?

The 757s will get a system comparable to the 767/777 fleet for now (which still beats what Y pax get on all but a handful of DL, AA, UA, and NW flights across the pond), and AVOD will appear on the rest of the widebody fleet in about 4 years using 787 technology, which reportedly will be a wireless IFE system, thus saving quite a bit of weight.

CO is looking at AVOD for the 757-200 fleet, but it depends on money....the 752s, per what I hear, could get AVOD in both classes, could get AVOD only in BF, could get PTVs similiar to the 767 in coach, or the entire project could get postponed or cancelled. Too soon to tell, CO needs to make some money first.

No IFE upgrade is planned for the 767/777 fleet at this time.

And, congrats to CO - the airline deserves recongition for consistently good service.

I'm AAdvantage Platinum, but flew CO EWR - DFW in first class last week. CO's onboard experience is top-notch. F/A's some of the best ever. Meal beat AA hands down. Real silverware and glass cups, not plastic. I was the first person off the plane and waited less than 1 minute for my checked bag. That's got to be a record.

My only request would be for power ports on the B737.

All in all, a great flight on the Proud Bird with the Golden Tail.

Nice to hear that Co has been awarded.
Unfortunately I cannot say that I had a great deal of service/attentiveness in the past 5 trips ( all last year) in which I had to use them.
Without starting a flame I have better treatment on UA ( and I think that being *gold helps a lot in this)

Audio-Video-On-Demand = AVOD

Under this system, one can start, stop, pause a particular program on a seat by seat basis. Thus, no waiting for 3 hours for the programs to repeat, one can pause a program while using the rest room, or a pax can start a movie whe he/she awakens from a nap, etc. etc.

I agree with you. However, don't ever think that this applies to CO Micronesia. A total different experience - rude FAs/groundstaff, awful food - just the opposite of their mainland/european/latin american operations.

Way to go CO. I've always had a fondness for you. If I hadn't have chosen to be a flight attendant for TWA (no regrets) you would have been my choice. Glad to see that there is still a first class american airline left.

Really? Having used Air Mike to go to/from GUM several times, I really found no difference, other than the DC-10 had a few less seats in B/F. Of course, since this was a DC-10, that means I haven't made that flight (CO1/2) in a couple years. . . sorry to hear that is now the case.

Every time I've flown with CO Mike, which has been numerous times over my career, starting with 727-100s and DC-6Bs out of HNL, I have received phenomenal service overall from the former Air Micronesia and the CMI division of Continental.

I have taken 10-12 trips out to Guam, Palau, Truk, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Koror for diving and other tropical excursions, and all have been with CO Micronesia. Their service generally is very warm, personable, professional, and attentive. My perception is skewed as an employee of the company, but please understand that your seemingly limited experience has demonstrated what is far from the norm at our CMI division. I'm sorry you had an unpleasant flight.

Seemingly inexperienced? Try over 50 flights to such destinations as HNL, MAJ, KWA, JON (the early days), KSA, PNI, TKK, YAP, GUM, ROR, MNL, DPS. How many times have I seen people with confirmed bookings denied boarding as the CO Mike employees at PNI were bribed by FSM government officials to get a last minute seat. Destroyed luggage with no compensation, I could go on an on , but as you said:

Well, I stand corrected.

As I cannot determine your experience based on previous posts, do not consider that as a personal attack. The impression I get from posts above was that your experience was derived from an isolated incident, not a series of misfortune.

However, with a comparable number of segments with CMI, dating since 1976, I must say that I am surprised to see such negative feedback. I never was witness to the corruption that you describe- but it does not surprise me that it happens. With such a vital air route operating a limited schedule, there is no doubt that local politics would play a major role in its operation. These days, it is a much better-run carrier, but the staff both on the ground and in the air have remained consistently great since my first flight with them.

One must understand that such "issues" come with the territory.

No, I'm the one who should be corrected for my tone. Now you have me thinking about my past experiences and I will admit that dealing with the people in PNI have left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. We (some of my ex colleagues and myself) have come up with some tricks which do show that the people at Continental do value our business. Everytime we try to make a reservation we are almost gauranteed a NO! (flight full) from the reservation agents in PNI. However, we just pick up the phone and dial Stateside reservations and almost always get a seat. Obviously, seats are blocked at the FSM end until the last minute for politicians who might want to jet away to Hawaii or Guam (and the justifiable medical).

Once again, please excuse my tone - Like I said, I just have had so many bad experiences with the Air Mike division (my last flight being 2 years ago) that things are hard to forget.

Having just done EWR-CDG and CDG-EWR two weeks ago in the 777 on the way there and 767-200 on the way back I was very impressed. I took DL's BusinessElite over last year to MXP from ATL and the difference is astounding. Not to knock DL but CO's product is a lot better. The seats even on the 767, meals especially in the manner its served and the crew's were great both ways. Warm. Friendly, professional and very knowledgeable about both France and CO. Great flights both ways. -Matt in KITH

I am surprised to hear that LPLA. I just flew the CO Mike "island hopper" last month and I was very very impressed with the crew. I thought they did and amazing job. It takes a lot of patience to deal with such a flight for 16hours and 5 stops. From the beginning I was chatting with one of the flight attendant how was very friendly throughout the whole flight. She was amazed that I was taking the flight for fun.
The flight is not as fun as it used to be because now security is very strict. In each stop, they make it mandatory for 1 side of the plane (ABC rows) to disembark with their carry-ons that need to be placed on a cart outside the plane. The other side needs to stay in and identify their carry-ons when security comes on board. They alternated the rows in each stop. The flight crew needs to deal with this in every stop.
Also, you are not allowed to go outside the terminal anymore. You have to stay in small waiting are that has no facilities.
Re-boarding was confusing because people would change their seats and too many carry-on bags wouldn’t fit. Still, the F/A were friendly and served meals or snacks in a full flight. I also got to talk to the friendly Mexican co-pilot about the plane (737-800). My 2nd flight on CO Mike was from Guam to Manila and it was also excellent. Nice meal for a 3 hour flight and I thought the service was even better than mainline CO.

GREAT! I'm just glad for you that you didn't have to deal with the ground crews in some of the places you stopped.
You also probably made your reservations in the US which means you qualified for much lower "visit Micronesia" fares, which run about half of what we had to pay. Also, transferring in HNL and GUM reduces your chances of being denied boarding because of reasons I discussed before. Try flying some of these routes ORIGINATING in the islands and see how pleasant your trip is.
