GF - Fleet Plans And Possible 777 Order?

Thu May 05, 2005 9:02 pm

Hi guys,

Need some info on Gulf Air. I know they have a fleet of nine A340-300s (5x312s, and 4 313Xs - 1 is ex-SQ and three are ex-LH), six A332s (TRENT 772 powered), nine CF6 powered 767-300ERs (for Gulf Traveller), and eleven A320s (CFM56 powered).

This info is a year old now - is it still current?

What do they have on order?
Did they ever replace the A320 they lost?
Surely a major prospect for the A350?
Any plans for A321s?
Do they fly to Iraq?
Will they ever look at A380 or NG A340s?
What about the 773ER or 772LR?

Is LHR their only UK gateway? Any plans to serve MAN or LGW?

And finally - does anyone agree with me that their new livery is the most beautiful in the sky?
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

I'll try to answer a little

I believe they are assessing either A350 or 787

Others will know more about A380, I've heard nothing. As for A345/A346 and the 772LR/773ER I do belive that they have a requirement for about 10 frames and this is their main fleet planning at the moment as they need capacity delivered before A350/787 EIS.

Mid last year the CEO of GF Mr Hogan (?) spoke of a far larger requirement but with the emergence of EY & QR and their aggressive expansion plans it appears that GFs requirements may have been downscaled since the expansion of these 2 carriers, plus EKs continued growth has made them re-assess their position. Mr Hogan has since alluded to the 10 frame requirement I mentioned earlier and that due to EY, QR & EK their expected requirements have been downscaled.

It's got to be up there. When I see them lining up for final approach in the evening over West London for LHR and the weathers good their airplanes look simply stunning.

Correct me if I'm wrong on anything.

They have recently returned one A320 to it's lessor... So, no they aren't increasing the A320 fleet...

Gulf Traveller were planning to fly to BHX this year from AUH, but I'm not sure if the route has been dropped?

I think a BAH-BHX service would be better rather than AUH!

GF is one of only four airlines to ever cancel an entire 777 fleet order.

Be interesting to see how willing Boeing would be to negotiate with them.

I believe Boeing will definitely grasp any opportunity to make a deal with Gulf Air and any other airline. Who knows, maybe GF will buy some new equipment from Boeing and follow the example of Air Canada and Air India.

Also, it seems that they are really hit by the aggresive expansion of other airlines in the Gulf. How are they coping anyway?

Forgot to mention that, thanks.

As to how willing Boeing would be to negotiate with GF, I asked that same question of Boeing and IB. Boeing changed their sales team last year and Mr Stonecipher attended the final pitch to IB for the 73G. Their renewed efforts have worked well to this point. After seeing that, I'd expect Boeing to make a very competitive offer, if required. Just my $.02
