AA New "Low-Fare Guarantee"

Fri May 06, 2005 2:01 am

I have a question. my friend has been looking for flights to LSE. she wants to fly AA because of the miles. she knows about the low fare guarantee and saw yahoo is offering 312 r/t while AA.com offers 354 r/t. same flights, same dates same rules etc etc. i told her about the voucher and refundable money. she said well thats great and all but are we still confirmed seats on the flight? And I said I didnt know, so I went to look at AA.com and no where does it say we would STILL have confirmed seats? So my question is, if we find a lower fare another website, and email them and they refund the money and give a voucher do they cancel our seats or are we still confirmed on the flights with confirmed seats and no stand by stuff?

Without going into all the technical hoops AA makes you jump through ,all I can say is either buy the cheaper ticket if money is a concern or buy the AA ticket if she really wants the miles.

Over on FlyerTalk, the opinion of many there are that this "Low fare guarantee" is worthless.

i don't know about the "low fare guarantee" because I always wind up finding the lower fare on AA.com anyway...

there wouldn't be a problem getting seat confirmation on the flight.... if you purchase the ticket for that day, you'll have seat confirmation..in fact, you get to choose your seats at time of booking...

before you hit the "purchase" button, u'll have your fare structure and your seat location..

i've never had a problem in the past 8 years with AA.com...

note: i'm assuming you will be purchasing the ticket from aa.com

AA.com is a great website. You can still chose or amend your seating on AA.com if you book with another agent, you just need to register with them and use the record locater. From what I understand about AA's fare guarantee, you have to book your flight with them, and then if you find a lower fare on offer you notify them of this then they refund you the difference. You can only do this on the same day that you purchase your tickets, so if you find a cheaper fare after midnight the offer is invalid.

I would agree with this view. You should only try to get the guarantee if you are interested in the miles more than the cash and are okay with the very real possiblity that you will not get any credit, voucher, and/or refund.

Having purchased AA tickets on several websites, including aa.com, and through travel agents, I would say this is not always possible. Unless, perhaps, you know something about how aa.com functions that I do not. When aa.com has the same price as the other sites I visit, I will usually purchase through them. However, when the price is off by more than ~ $25 (the value of the miles, IMO) then I go purchase the tickets elsewhere.
