"According to French sources, Lufthansa is about to buy LOT Polish Airlines. Among else signals, LH's financial chief Karl-Ludwig Kley has been cited as eager to make such kind of investment. LOT owe Lufthansa their entrance to Star Alliance and have already been given the opportunity to become an important link between Eastern Europe and Frankfurt."

Lufthansa is about to buy LOT Polish Airlines

Let the rumors roll. If anything LOT will act as KLM is to Air France. LOT would not give into the fantasy of some and purchase a 787. In turn if they were to be part of the Lufthansa group, look for LOT to become an all Airbus operation with consolidated service.

Anyone who actually read the article which sparked this must have been completely bewildered. It emerged from a loose comment from Lufthansa, which didn't even mention LOT, was dismissed by both airlines, as well as a senior executive in LOT who would have known if it was true, AND the article even admitted that it was unlikely.

Ahh, but there's another article, in Polish, on this subject now:
http://www.polska.pl/aktualnosci/gospodarka/article.htm?id=166504

According to the article LH is planning on spending 3.8 billion Euros on investments.

I haven't been able to find the French article, so if any of our French speaking friends have a link for it, and could post it, that would be greatly appreciated.

If true, perhaps we won't see Airbus wide-bodies in LOTs fleet (given the rumors that they will probably purchase the 787), but perhaps some A320s in the future?

My bet is that LH is more interested in United after they exit bankruptcy or to thelp them get out... There have been rumors on this already.. both Star members... I can really see that... honestly, hope for it... I rather have LH save United than it go belly up... Of course, it wouldn't be full ownership just the 49%... enough to give them enough cash....LH/United would be a powerhouse...

For whatever reason, It saddens me when national airlines are purchase by another... all European countries have their own flavor... and if they start to merge you lose that... America can lose UA to LH... We got AA, NW and CO if you want that 'cowboy' experience...

So LH you need to buy United and leave LOT as it is... Looking forward to that day of flying their 787s...  Wink
Airbus or Boeing - it's all good to me!

From well placed sources, the 787 purchase is just about a done deal. If anything, according to these same sources, LOT will be an all Boeing fleet.
I've heard the same rumors about Lufthansa buying LOT. My wife works for LH and same rumors are flying around there. There's also a rumor that LH bit off more then it can chew with it's Swiss purchase. If they do buy LOT, it would be silly to think that being an all Boeing fleet would be a negative factor, at least from LH's perspective. There are also rumors that LH is seriously considering the 787 anyway. If the A350 goes the way of the Sonic Cruiser, then eventually, I believe that purchase is a real possibility.

Decision about buying LOT by LH will not be soon, but decision about buying new planes is very very late !!! so I don't thing that LOT will wait with buying planes for LH and then getting new widebodied aircrafts. To the end of 2007 they plan to get 8 planes size 767.

Any source for that? I know about 6th 767 but 2 more sound too optymistic considering 0 growth over last 15 years.

Well, yes and no. There's as much flavor across European countries as there is across American states. In fact, these days you have to look hard to find a difference between, say Vienna and Paris, aside from the language and the most notorious landmarks. The point is, today's Europe is a very cohesive place, at least as far as the major hurban areas are concerned. You have the same stores, everyone dresses the same, the cars are the same, etc.

And these so called national airlines have stopped being national airlines a while ago. Not LOT yet, but most are now publicly traded companies with investors from different countries.

I don't see why this is like AF-KL? When considering the AF-KL merger till now, it seems network-wise a pretty equal partnership. Distributing the destinations they can't both serve with profit; and keeping a huge part of the network in the current form. I think the Swiss-Lufthansa example is comparable.

However, in the current shape already, the difference between LH and LO is much bigger than it was between AF and KL. AFAIK, LOT's only long-haul destinations are JFK, ORD and YYZ; quite less than LH, AF or KL. I think by the way that due to the polish population in this 3 cities, there would be enough demand to support these routes non-stop from WAW. So in that regard, it won't change much. By the way, when browsing through LO's timetable, there are already many LH-codeshares...

Buying LOT would be logical, but I ´guess they still have enough work to do with Swiss. According to United: I don´t believe they would ever buy a big part of it. That could come out like the takeover of Chrysler by Daimler - it´s just not worth all the trouble.

I hope LOT stays independent. I don't want to see another European Carrier buy them. For sentimental reasons only if nothing else.
