Wizz Air Expansion In Poland With Flights To LUT

Fri May 06, 2005 6:54 am

Wizz Air, the largest low cost - low fare airline in Poland, at a press conference today announced that it would start operations from Poznań, which becomes the fourth Polish airport served by the airline.

Wizz Air’s launch in Poznań comes after a successful establishment in Katowice, Warsaw and Gdansk in Poland and Budapest in Hungary. Since the start of operations in May 2004 Wizz Air carried over 1,1 million passengers, over 700 000 of which travelled on the airline’s routes to and from Poland.

Poznań operation will start on 18 September 2005 with 4 weekly flights to London-Luton. Tickets are already on sale for as low as 39 PLN (excluding taxes and charges) on wizzair.com or by calling the Wizz Air call centre on (22) 351 94 99.

Wizzair are really growing, they want to add 7 aircraft a year to their fleet apparently! They carried their 1 millionth pax at the end of April, which is a massive achievement considering their infancy. Beats even Ryanair?!

Great news, go Wizz! ...but I have heard about Wizz Air's pilots - not the 'most professional' in the industry, so to say.

I have a lot of friends - ATC, MALEV pilots, etc. telling me Wizz has the highest rate of go-arounds at BUD , mainly because of very high approach speeds. There was a near miss not so long ago, when a Wizz Air pilot apparently made a wrong turn after going around, almost colliding with a Malev F70 who had taken off from the parallel runway. Wizz Air is expanding so rapidly they have started hiring pilots who are not sufficiently prepared for airline ops. SkyEurope has the same reputation (pilots), at least here in Hungary.

BS rumors. Malev and LOT is not happy with the competition obviously. And their pilots are bitter because Wizz hires pilots mainly from Germany and Holland and not from Hungary and Poland (since none of them is Airbus 320 rated).

...maybe just rumors, but controllers Budapest ATC (which has nothing to do with MALEV) are saying this, not just MALEV pilots. The incident mentioned is a fact. Wizz does actually hire pilots from Hungary, they are sent abroad for their type-rating.

Wizz hires pilots only with A320 type rating unless you agree to pay for your type rating yourself.

LUT? Laura Station in Queensland, Australia, according to www.airlinecodes.co.uk
Quite a stretch for an A320, or are they planning to acquire an A345 or 777LR?  Wink
