South African 743 Question

Fri May 06, 2005 1:05 pm

Hey what was the reason for painting one of their 743's in the Ndizani livery? Was it for the 96 Olympics and SA's athletes or for the 2012 olympic bid?

South Africa had bid to get the 2004 Olympic Games to be hosted in Cape Town - Ndizani was one of the promotional tools for that...

Unfortunately, the bid failed - but, fortunately, the livery stayed.

I flew Ndizani from ZRH to JNB back in 2003. A great plane indeed ...

What was the date they introduced this special color?

I have flown on Ndizani from ZRH to JNB in 2003 as well. May be we have been on the same flight.  Wink

If my memory serves me correctly Ndizani was used to transport the South African olympics team to Atlanta in '96. The colour scheme was applied for the flight and was never changed. The aircraft is currently sitting in the middle of Johannesburg International Airport looking quite forlorn.

Bobg is correct, the colour scheme had nothing to do with the Cape Town bid. I remember seeing Ndizani flying around over Cape Town before departing for Atlanta, escorted by 2 fighter jets, was an impressive sight flying round in front of Table Mountain!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...
