Qatar Airways Is In 'advanced Discussions'

Fri May 06, 2005 7:45 pm

Dubai: Qatar Airways is in 'advanced discussions' with Airbus and Boeing to purchase new aircraft but wants certain demands to be met before concluding a deal, an airline official said.

"It is a strategic decision and the company will not rush to take any decision before receiving all the answers. We are negotiating on Boeing 7E7 and Airbus A350," chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker said.

"We're in an advanced stage of discussions with both manufacturers and hope to conclude a deal with both or one of the two before the Paris (air) show...

Has anyone told him he 7E7 is now known as the 787? Where has he been hiding recently? I bet he hasnt even heard the A380 has made its first flight yet...

Perhaps news will reach him eventually?

I bet this one goes to Airbus. The heat is on for A-350 orders before the show, and the ME has lots of Airbuses running around. Also, aren't these guys big A fans anyway?

There is another thread about the number of deposits that indicate QR has already agreed to buy at least 10 787's.

Right now I think the only reasonably sure customers for the A350 are EK and ILFC, with EI and IB probable.....

With all the help that Qatar has given USA with military bases in DOH + USA allowing them to fly to NYC from next year + a whole load of other benefits due to cooperation given during the 2nd Gulf War, QR and Qatar as a state I feel has more to gain by ordering a large bunch of B 787s.

B 788s to be used on medium density long haul routes
B 789s to be used on high density long haul routes
B 783s to be used on high density short-medium haul routes to Indian subcontinent-BKK-Gulf-East Africa.

The rumor is an order for 10 B 788s and 50 B 789s.

If QR does indeed order these B 787s, I would like them to make sure that the U.S. Govt allows them to operate daily A 346s/B 787s to NYC and other US cities such as ORD-IAH-IAD-LAX-SFO-DTW with a FULL PAYLOAD CAPACITY and not have 40-60 seats empty per flight like EKs A 345s have daily to JFK from DXB. Does USA and QATAR have an open skies treaty agreement?

Personnally I'm fed up with this theory that a company has to do something because once somebody did something for their country.

Let the airlines buy the a/c they want.

They have paid refundable deposits on 10 787s. But it's refundable. So, it means it's not a done deal.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has specifically said that they will not "negotiate" that way in the past. You can't "buy" yourself route athority, and aquiring it isn't that difficult in the first place. The DOT could care less what equippment you fly.

Thankfully, there is no indications that this is a politicized order.

Found in a Seattle Times article:

An internal [Boeing] document shows a further 35 accepted proposals not yet mentioned publicly. That would boost the tally of orders from 255 to 290.

The accepted proposals include an order for 10 787-8s going to Qatar Airways, now an all-Airbus customer on the Arabian Gulf.

Other still-open proposals from Qatar could bring its total to 60 787s, according to a Boeing insider.

The fact that 10 have already been allocated production slots suggests Boeing confidence that this deal will go through.

hi,
well QR are all-airbus anyway, so it would seem easier to go A350, but who knows?
I came. I saw. I conquered
