Qatar Airways To Start NY And More

Sat May 07, 2005 12:48 pm

Qatar Airways, which operates from Doha to 62 destinations at this time, plans to raise that number to 70 by the end of the year. The airline plans to operate flights to the US as soon as all regulatory requirements have been met. Qatar's first destination would be New York.

Great news! I love their livery and hope they choose JFK over EWR.

Always wondered when they'd start NYC service.

Any other US destinations in the works? IAD or LAX perhaps?

I'm all for another new airline at JFK. This has been a great year so far for new airlines serving JFK. We recently got Thai and LTU, and Eurofly and Air Tahiti Nui are coming soon. Qatar has a great livery...bring it on!  Smile

Any guesses on what aircraft they'd use for the JFK flight(s)?

Not to mention great service...

I can't wait to see its plan at JFK, but I still wish Qatar can come to Hong Kong soon.

Which NY airport has enough "space" for additional airlines, JFK or EWR ?

Depending on the time of the day, both airports can have empty periods. However, JFK has the advantage with Terminal 4, which can be pretty much described as a ghost down outside of the European flight push. Though I wouldn't know at which times QR would arrive and depart at JFK, which obviously plays a big role.

I hope QR chooses to fly to JFK!

Maybe they will fly the A340-600's to JFK that are on order?

Could the A330's operate the route?

Any idea on any new routes?

Rob!

I've heard GLA mentioned as possible new route for QR following the tremendous success of EK here.

From what they already have or soon will have, it could only be the A340-600.

Why the presumption of JFK? The flight could just as easily originate from EWR...

EWR's IAB Terminal B has as many International gates as JFK's T-4, also EWR has more Domestic connections via CO.

They could go with EWR or JFK.

EWR would certainly be my preferred choice for the domestic connections, not only CO but all the others as well.

If/when this route comes to fruition, I would like to give it a try. Would give me another option from Kuwait to the US, especially if they would come up with an expanded seat pitch, ala SQ, which would make that 14 or so hour flight much more enjoyable. I have thought about trying the DXB-JFK flight on Emirates, but the thought of flying 14 hrs nonstop at 32 or 33 inches scares the hell out of me, cause I have some seriously long legs.... Smile

I thought that the two A380's they ordered would be fixed on a DOH-JFK/EWR when they come into service in 2008.

Interestingly enough, although EWR benefits from having a hub carrier with domestic flights, it's JFK that does a greater percentage of international connecting traffic - EWR is the NYC international O&D airport.

I would think JFK because of its location in New York state.

Qatar Airways does have A340-600s on order which should be derlivered in 2006. It's great that New York is once again being linked with the Middle East. It would be interesting to see if Gulf Air and MEA start service again to JFK.

I would much rather see a A340-600 or A330 serving JFK then a A380. I love the A380 but it would block the skyline!

Also I was not aware of any construction at EWR for the A380.

the 380's are Ordered for DOH-LHR route. Why would an airlines order giant 380 for a route which they don't even fly.

AirbusCanada, are both A380's just for the LHR route?

Does QR have any partners in North America? I know QR has VS,BM and LH as partners, VS and LH both serve JFK and EWR! I think JFK will be chosen rather than EWR!

I think they will probably go to JFK.

VIP visitors all go to JFK, so presumably they have some kind of handling agent there already!

What VIP visitors?..

I see Saudi 767s, 747s at EWR all the time. As well as Bill Gates and John Travolta's 707.

Are you sure about Air Force One? It seems to come to EWR quite often. I have had to spend more hours than I care to, on ground hold at EWR, because of Air Force One.

JFK has less traffic during the day (lack of domestic flights) thus less intrusive when AF-1 flies in to sleepy JFK during the morning.
