US Airways , New Flight To Venice

Mon May 09, 2005 8:15 pm

US Air is going to start today its new daily service between Philadelphia and Venice , Italy. I know that 762ER will be put on this route , but does anyone know which is the aircraft 's registration on the 1st inaugural flight? And other information about this flight (LF...etc) ?

Thanks

N656US will fly the inaugural to VCE today. Load is heavy but not full. Surprisingly, tomorrow's return VCE-PHL also has plenty of pax.

KEWL more intl routes - - -
When WN decided on PIT what Intl routes were lost from US, if any?
Why not more INTL Routes for US air?

Opening new stations, especially international, is a capital intensive venture.
So US Airways must have seen some great potential in Venice for them to invest in the start of service...smart...not much service from North America...better in my opinion than them wandering into the same old markets served by the competing air carriers.

Hey LXsaab2000,

Did you fly Saabs? I used to fly ZRH-VCE all the time. I have probably been there 50 times.

Do you work in Europe? I have my JAA licences and used to fly for LX before getting bumped by the Astronauts. Now I fly CRJs in the US. How 'bout you?

You'd never know US was starting this route at all judging by the Philadelphia press. The Inquirer Travel section is still recoving from its orgasmic response to WN starting PIT.

Once again the Inquirer has become the de facto WN PR machine.

Does this mean that US may be recovering somewhat? We've all been predicting it would be gone by now, but it just started a new international route...

Thanks,

Do any other US airlines operate USA-Venice services, I think DL does?

Good news for US though!

Delta does - that's it I think
(I think it operates as an extension of their MXP service).

No, just a JFK-VCE nonstop.

Yup, seasonal only, along with the new BCN service.

Actually, Delta operates a daily nonstop JFK-VCE flight using a 763ER, that goes down to 4-5 weekly flights during the winter.

My mistake - thanks for the correction. I'm sure somebody used to operate a US-VCE flight with a stop in MXP - AZ maybe?

It is expensive to set up international stations, but at this time, that is where the money is. Those overseas flights are usually pretty good cash cows.

DL is going very well on VCE-JFK flights with a medium LF about 90% and a lot of cargo load.

Yes, Alitalia operated the route around 1998-2000 with a 767-300!

Venice, is that capitol of the Veneto region. The Veneto is one of the most, if not the most industrious of Italian regions. Veneto, is part of the Padania arch from Torino(Turin), Milano(Milan), Verona, Venezia(Venice), and Trieste. However, many chose not to refer to the region as Padania. I guess that is something that only those of us with famiy in the region, will claim! Aside from that I wish US Airways a great fortune with the advent of this route. Delta has proven the route to be most rewarding. In addition look for service this summer on Eurofly's A330 from JFK to Bologna, Palermo, and Napoli(Naples).

They are also limited in international routes because of planes, especially widebodies.

Yes it is, and for mostly that reason too.

US doesn't plan on going anywhere, and this is the third consecutive summer US has added European routes.

I hope someone gets some pictures of the US 767 in VCE tomorrow or over the next few days. I'm surprised there's not a DL @ VCE pic anywere in the database.

With the extra 767's now flying to Venice and Barcelona, how many workable "spare" widebodies does US have kickin' around?

I don't think any. US is hard-pressed when it comes to widebodies, that is until they take deliveries of the A330-200 in 07' or 08'.

Two to Three Years longer than people are betting on United Airlines existence! Not to mention United Airlines ran scared from the Italian market! Remember FCO-IAD, MXP-IAD circa 1990's to 2002?

Naples is a dirty industrial town, I can see why there is not much service there from the US.

I'm going to be there next week, but only long enough to catch the ferry to Ischia.

A ferry to Ischia from Naples? You have to be kidding me! There are much better was to get to Ischia from Naples than a ferry!

You would be suprised at the loads Eurofly is showing for its new JFK-Naples service! In addition, you seem to forget that in the past TWA ran bus service from the airport in Rome to Naples, and Florence! Not to bad for a dirty and industrial city, now is it?

It was a joke dude, get a life. Are you some sort of morality enforcer? You should go out find a rude person and give 'em a hug. Perhaps you can save the world one sarcastic person at a time.

What about you? The best you can do is make a joke about an airline going out of business. Not only have people who have made that same joke been repeatedly wrong, but it's not even funny.

And I have nothing to say about morality.

Actually, in terms of industry, Napoli isn't nearly as industrial as the so-called "Golden Triangle" (Genova-Torino-Milano). I also don't think that it's a "dirty" town either. I happen to think that the entire Campania region is one of the most beautiful places in the world (OK, I'm biased since all of my family comes from there).

However, you say that you can see why there wouldn't be demand for service to NAP from JFK, but you're going through there to get to Ischia. Not everyone who takes the flight would be going to Napoli proper. There's Vesuvio, Pompei, Capri, Paestum (where my family lives), Sorrento, and plenty more to see in the region. And considering the number of Americans who trace their roots to that area, I think a flight will do quite well. Apparently, Eurofly thinks the same.

I love Napoli, and am a proud son of Campania. There are plenty of things I could say about Texas, but I won't.

A huge portion of tourists to Italy take the trek south from Rome to the Naples area. Personally, I think a flight to that area in the summer would do really well, as there is a lot to do in the general Naples vicinity. That, and the train ride from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale is sometimes less than pleasant...

You know, UALPHLCS, we have the same situation here in Denver. The Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post are very pro-Frontier and neutral-to-negative toward United. Same situation with the major TV networks (4,7, 9). They seem to always drag out the same retired flight attendant to talk about how terrible United is.

I guess it's understandable since F9 is a real hometown airline and UA has its roots in Chicago, but still. Lots and lots of people work at UA in Denver and lots and lots of us Denver passengers consider UA "our" airline of choice.
