Boeing's 747 UltraMega Top To Fly In 2006?

Tue May 10, 2005 12:16 am

I'm wondering when we'll see this whale-of-a-plane starting to fly 7E7 parts?

This may not be an A380, but I bet people are going to think it is...
http://www.boeing.com/commercial/7e7/747wt.html & http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/...3/photorelease/q4/pr_031013g2.html

I couldn't get the pictures to show up on a.net, so I just posted the links. I'm sure one of you can figure this thing out if you want. . .

Cool, good news!

Will the 747 UltraMega Top be available for cargo airlines such as SQ cargo and EK SkyKargo??

I was just doing a "play-on-words" . . . . . .this 747 will be transporting 787 parts for Boeing and no other carriers or cargo carriers for that matter. It should be flying soon (next couple of years) for flight tests. . . .anybody?

I don't think the aircraft will be made available for purchase or outside use. There will be 3 airframes and they will be very busy shuttling parts around the globe for the 787 program.

The mods on the LDF is supposed to begin a tthe end of this year with first flight and certification for during 2nd half of 2006 I believe. They plan on having three aircraft to support 787 production but right now they have one plane on hand to start mod owrk. I would guess they would be buying the two other planes over the next year.

I don't see why not it won't be used for other stuff. The Beluga is used plenty for special charters. There will always be some excess capacity.

I have read that the Aircraft will be operated and owned buy an outside operator other than Boeing such as Evergreen or EVA off Taiwan.

I will try and find the Story and post the link!

My goodness is that thing a beast or what, what an ugly airplane. Hopefully this is not a prelude of things to come, first the A380 & now the 747 Megatop, two ugly beasts, HA!

Are there any specs available? Length and diameter of the cargo hold would be of special interest.

Just a speculation: maybe they can sell two of them to Airbus for A380 parts transport. The beluga diameter is AFAIK only slightly too small for the A380 fuse parts. The 747 is also longer than the A300, maybe long enough for the A380 wings. Wing chord, however, will probably still be an issue.

It kind of looks like boeings answer to the beluga and a380 combined to make some butt ugly and I also cant see how all the bulges on this would make it anywhere near aerodynamic, I know the beluga flys but the French sort of have a knack of making fat overweight stuff fly) not trying to start a flame war just thought I would get that off my chest

I would say no.. Much like the Super Guppy and Belgua, it will be single purpose built with one, maybe two units.

Finally....Boeing's answer to the Beluga!!

Sorry, Airbus is behind the curve again... Boeing did the Super Guppy 30+ years ago.

Hmm, those two pictures actually show slightly different planes (look at the tail section), furthermore the model on the lower picture doesn't look very professional. Obviously, the project is either in a very early state of development or Boeing doesn't want us to know too much.

From what I've read so far, Boeing actually owns the aircraft (They just bought the three 747s) but will use an outside operator. Wouldn't those aircraft need US registrations for the ferry flights within the US based factories as well as the Japanese parts suppliers?

From what I've heard, the outside operator who will actually fly the planes will be able to charter them out when Boeing is not using them. So there would be some limited availability for outside customers.

I think Airbus made the A380 solely for that purpose.

As long as it flies, who cares how aerodynamic it is? It will serve one purpose and that is ferrying parts around the globe for the 787.

Boeing made the airplane on which the Super Guppy was based, but didn't do the conversion. Aero Spacelines did, IIRC.

I don't think the FAA would allow an airline to carry passengers in an unpressurized compartment.

From the link -

"Engineers at the Boeing Design Center in Moscow are helping design the freighter's enlarged upper fuselage and rear fuselage"

Moscow?

Can we have clarification on that? It's neat that the leaders in massive airframes are getting in on this (pardon the simplification Ukraine).

The intended cargo for this plane will mainly consist of air, like 95% or more, filling-up the aircraft sections it will carry. In order to seat passengers there will be a need for at least two decks, in case of cargo "re-inforced decks", plus room for baggage, etc, etc, ...

IMO that would make the plane so heavy the design simply would no fly. But with very hollow aircraft sections that is a different story.

The lower model was not built to look pretty. It was built for wind tunnel testing.

You would have to pressurize the fuse, which would make it much heavier.

Does anyone know if it's going to have an American registration/operator? I would think it would have to. BTW, the a/c was specifically designed for shuttling 787 sections to their final assembly points from factories in several US states as well as Japan.
Okay all my very knowledgeable friends here on a.net already knew that...
