Just Announced: UA To Get Wifi By 2006

Tue May 10, 2005 3:15 am

On my Onboard Updates last week they finally announced that Verizon is pulling "Jet Connect" email/IM service from the fleet and starting mid 2006 we will have WiFi onboard.

Another reason for business travellers to fly United!

Wow, wireless internet from the plane.....

Sweet! One more reason that UA is, IMHO, the best US carrier.  bigthumbsup

Only thing is I hope that this doesn't mean that cellphones are coming to the cabin....

If this is true, it will be indeed great news for UA and their passangers. I really hope, however, that they will also install power outlets on economy.

Whom are UA going to use for the air-to-ground segment ?
Connexion ? ARINC/Skylink ? Someone else ?

The article given to all crew only referenced Verizon. I didn't know they had such technology available.

The Verizon service that is going to be discontinued is basically the old [GTE] Airfone service which was designed originally for voice-calls and so uses circuit-mode ("modem emulation"). The existing system doesn't really support "internet access" as we know it.

If one puts Wi-Fi on the aircraft for "internet services", one needs a way to get the data packets from the aircraft to the ground. There are two satellite oriented ways of doing this Connexion and ARINC/Skylink but the equipment and non-recurring cost is high.

Perhaps UA is looking at some future Verizon terrestrial tower based services in CONUS using the 850MHz band for public non-safety aviation comms.

Perhaps the airline version of DirecTV's Directway satellite broadband service? To me, that may be something that if DirecTV isn't working on they ought to look into.

It is almost half way into 2005....You do not get a new system STC'ed in under 1 year for something this complex. They are going to have to go with somethign existing if they want it for 2006. This is a MAJOR a/c system upgrade.

Just two questions:

1. Would would be the price? Or it will be given for free?
2. What would be the speed?

This most certainly is not happening in 2006. The technology is in its infancy, and is not cost effective at this point, especially for a carrier heading towards its 3rd year of BK.

Yet another reason for nobody to fly UA.

We have to invest in our product offering to keep our business clientele happy and from straying to other airlines. With an unparalleled global route structure, an award winning mileage program, some of the most efficient and customer friendly aircraft available, and service rates improving, adding more business friendly services is just icing on the cake.

The service and installation will BEGIN in mid 2006.

This sounds like something sent out of a press release for all UA employees to memorize. On the list of things UA needs to do, getting wi-fi in their planes should be around #294.

Absolutely right. Given UA's financial state at the moment and the fact that they might be facing an all-out labor mutiny (strikes by FAs and mechanics) in the next 4-6 weeks, I don't think that Wi-Fi access, something almost no airline in the world (in other words, no UA competitor) currently offers. There is no compelling competitive reason to do this, and certainly no financial justification for it.

Yet there is still no mention of putting PTV's in coach. This is precisely the reason that when traveling outside the U.S. I avoid American carriers like the plague. All the profits may be in the front of the plane, but that is no reason to treat everyone else like cargo. Y class may never be comfortable for a 10-13 hour jaunt, but there are some carriers who try, United not being one of them.

As they say you have to spend money to make money. Yes this wont save the airline but it will help retain high yield pax who will go to SQ because they have wifi (I know I would). Regardless of management or your paycheck/pension, its a good forward thinking move. The money going for this wouldn't go to your pension anyways. -Matt in KITH

Quoting KITH (Reply 23):

I think that any passengers who must make the choice between UA and SQ on competing routes have already chosen SQ.

I don't know if spending millions to retrofit your fleet with an untested, hardly used service when virtually none of your competitors use it constitutes a "forward thinking move." Now, exiting bankruptcy, making money again, cutting unnecessary costs and inefficiencies -- those are forward thinking moves.

Is UA actually spending any of their money on this or is an outside contractor fronting the cash and collecting the fees? If UA isn't paying for this then I would say it's smart.

However, I have to wonder about the contractor(if there is one). As they would lose money if UA goes under. Also they would lose money if any aircraft are repo'ed. They may want to insist that the service is installed only on planes owned by UA.

So the point is, I really don't care how United is or isn't paying for the technology... I'm just excited they're doing it and that will certainly make me adjust my ticket buying patterns. After all, isn't that the point?

Exactly my point! To quote the movie "Field of Dreams": "if you build it they will come".

To provide business travelers with the internet at realistic speeds means being a leader in the industry again and really giving the other legacies a run for their money. As LH adds Connexion and other international carriers follow suit, it is imperative that UA rise to the challenge and offers the most business friendly cabin possible.

Quoting Paul (Reply 28):
Those screens in Business are really of bad quality and size.

According to rumors around UA, expect huge updating of our International Business Cabin upon emergence from Chapter 11. We are adjusting our product offering to what the markets demand. If people are willing to pay for a product, then we will offer it! (ex. TED in leisure markets and PS in high yield markets)

I'm not a fool in regards to the sacrifice that I have made as well as my colleagues regarding pay cuts and concessions. I'm reminded every time I look at my pay stub! What I'm mindful of is the market realities that this business is FIERCELY competitive and we must be on the forefront in product offerings. What I'm most concerned about is long-term relevance in the marketplace for UA (which means JOB SECURITY for me!). With tools like WiFi onboard, we remain competitive and can achieve a higher RASM which is something not often discussed anymore.

Not at $20 an hour, and uh oh, what about Microsoft, hmm they just switched to NW completely.

However, UA is a good airline, I am flying as a paying pax for the first time in July the only other time i flew United was for the 777 employee flight back in 1994.

My guess is that the systems will be installed at little to no cost to UA. Think about it. It is pure revenue to Verizon and UA. Verizon would install the systems at their cost, and UA and Verizon would share in the revenues. Remember the airphones? Same kind of agreement, but they never really worked out and people did not want to pay that much to make a phone call.
I would gladly pay $20 for internet access on a 5 hour flight, most business men would to.

And I know this will ruffle some feathers, but business men could care less about a PTV and watching re runs of old movies and TV shows. Something like this is more of an attraction for a business traveller. I hope AA is not too far behind in line on this one.

Not rumor anymore! Tague has repeatedly stated in speeches that we will be updating United Business after exit.

I only hope that we would choose to take the next level of business class seat (innovate like Virgin/NZ J class) rather than just play catch up and implement the p.s. F seat as the new C seat (same as SQ Raffles).

After all, a product's shelf life increases when it goes beyond what's currently offered... saving money in the long run.

I'm not sure Verizon can spare the 850 for this vs. their regular cellular service. Also, Verizon only owns 1900 mhz licenses in some of their markets, so they may miss coverage across some of the US.

This will likely be something like Connexion or Connexion itself.

This is nothing to do with UA really. I read this morning the same service is being installed on Continental aircraft from next year and probably Delta and every other airline that has the current Verizon jetconnect service which will be discontinued. Verizon are just updating the product they offer to their airline customers. Has anybody ever used the current service as not once have I seen it being used myself??

Dont forget your airline can afford WI-FI, and not your pensions!

Running an airline is not a zero-sum game. Just because they install wi-fi doesn't automatically mean that someone else gets the shaft. The hope is to provide a service that draws more passengers, or increases the loyalty of current ones, which in turn increases business, revenues, and the potential for a successful emergence from bankruptcy.

Would you say the same thing about food service? "Oh, look at those meals. How can they afford to offer those when they can't even pay their pensions! They should stop any meal service, drinks too, until United emerges from bankruptcy and fully funds the pension program." I don't think so.

Has anybody ever used the current service as not once have I seen it being used myself??

I see people use JetConnect once in a while on Domestic flights. It's pretty cool to see them using the IM feature... I've been tempted on long red-eye's to plug in my laptop and chat. But I guess that would be bad since I was working.

I'm not sure Verizon can spare the 850 for this vs. their regular cellular service. Also, Verizon only owns 1900 mhz licenses in some of their markets, so they may miss coverage across some of the US.

I was referring to the spectrum currently allocated under 47 CFR § 22.857 of which 1.5MHz is proposed to allocated for broadband (sic) services. Sorry if I muddied the issue by using Verizon as an example.

Not rumor anymore! Tague has repeatedly stated in speeches that we will be updating United Business after exit.

My folks are flying to NRT on UA for business and taking UA. My dad has flown UA biz forever and loves the product. I hope that UA can get outta BK quick and keep their loyal biz class travellers.

Folks usually use CO on all travelling, but more direct flight on UA to the Far East for them. Dad usually goes 4x yearly to NRT on UA on biz. He has always been very pleased with it and told me he is sad to hear UA is having such problems financially.

Come on UA!!!

Like being the valedictorian at summer school if you ask me!

Touche, but still better to be the valedictorian at summer school than the kid who finishes last.
