SST- Whats Your Design

Tue May 10, 2005 8:25 pm

Hi,

I was just thinking of all the talk of an SST in recent years and while reading the sleeping in the cockpit thread thought to myself that a faster plane means less time for fatigue anyway, I know all of us here at a.net are all smart fellows and was wondering if anyone would kindly be able to tell us or visualise to us what they think they would design as a new SST if they were designing one.

Anyone who would like to join in would be greatly appreacheated (spelling...) so give us your ideas!

ps. I am studying to do commercial a/c design... just love it!

Thanks,

hmm... You must have been dreaming alright. Most seem to still think that airlines buy aircraft because their livery looks good on them...

Ain't that the truth?

I suspect that, with the present advanced state of global communications, the value of time as a commodity is going down - people don't necessarily need to save three hours on a transatlantic crossing to do business any more.

That just leaves the comfort element - reducing the need for people to spend 15 hours on a long-haul flight. If the SST ever makes a reappearance, I suspect it will be in the form of an affordable long-range transport that wouldn't trim a couple of hours here and there but instead, for example, make serious inroads into the European-Asian flight times.

But one thing I want to say is that the people who flew the concorde you can't say most of them didn't fly it to just get the rush of moving that fast!

I know I would have if I were older!

also I must add that the speeded flights would be a great economical advantage doing 2 flights a day insted of one

Thanks,

I'll bet on suborbital for that application.

Tu-244 seem like a good design, but under-funded. I still think Tupolev are the only aircraft company that could make a passenger super-sonic aircraft
today, the others either can´t or won´t.

Glom, I think your right.
The only real solution would be to develop a suborbital Super(Hyper)Sonic Aircraft. The design would only less resemble to the Concorde. It would look more like a gore with big engines at the end. The engines wouldn't work as we know them from the Concorde. They had to work with the SCRAMJETS technology. Those engines use the oxygen from the upper atmosphere, while they burn hydrogen. This a/c could it make up to Mach 10, or more. The passengers would have to seat in the fuselage/ wing combination, since the a/c would be developed as an flying gore. Maybe the a/c would have no windows.
Vertical stabilizers would be fitted at the wing tips.
The main question is: Who will be able to build an a/c like this? Fact is: Boeing and Airbus couldn't afford this project alone .
The only solution would be: A new company would have to be founded with the following specialists: NASA, ESA, BOEING, AIRBUS, LOCKHEED, GENERAL EL- ECTRIC, ROLLS-ROYCE, PRATT&WHITNEY, TUPOLEV, ILLJUSHIN and other company's which are in that matter.
Only with united power, it would be possible! Lets start to create a name for this new world aircraft company!!

Regards,
Patrick

The only reason they could pull it off in the 1960s/70s with the 144 was unlimited funding and access the the entire KGB industrial espionage department.
I don't think those requirements have changed though the reality has as they no longer have access to either.

I think Boeing has the technical expertise to pull it off and might do it IF there were a market for such aircraft.
EADS might also have that knowledge available through its parent companies (though not directly in-house).

- don't see what makes Tupolev and their 244 different from others who "can't or won't" and their proposals.

- to go to suborbital flight one needs to pass medical training/exam, you'll hardly be allowed just to buy ticket and go. While Concorde and Tu144 were just passenger aircraft - as long as you can afford it, you buy ticket and go. So, if ever built, should be any future SST.

My SST would look like the Millennium Falcon.
