Hmmm...

"India's biggest domestic airline, Jet Airways Ltd., said on Tuesday it would lease four new Airbus A330-200 aircraft for its international operations.

"The long-range aircraft, which will fly to London and New York when Jet launches services later this year, are in addition to the Boeing aircraft the company said it would buy for its domestic operations, an official told Reuters.""

Isn't that what the 343s they got from SA are for? London?

Good news!

Where will the A330-200's possibly fly to?

How many A340's are they getting?

9Ws has received one 340 this month and will be receiving 2 in June. These should be doing LON/NYC. If 330s would operate LON/NYC where would the 340s go? Some messed up news reporting here. Somebody needs to confirm this!

Well I do know that Jet is has chosen Brussels as there stopover on the way to EWR. I would think the EWR route would be with the A340-300 since it is longer then the LHR or LGW route.

So 9W are getting 2 A340-300's?

I guess BOM-BRU-EWR and BOM-LHR will be flown by the A340!

Doesn't the EWR flight need 2 A340's?

I would like to see 9W to order the A330's with PW or GE!

They will get an additional 4 A330-200s from Airbus starting May 2006.

Accroding to the Economic Times of India, 9W will be flying 14 weekly LHR flights i.e. double daily from India from December 2005 onwards.

A 332s are ideal aircraft to fly nonstops such as BLR-LHR, HYD-LHR, AMD-LHR, MAA-LHR etc.

in all this confusion, what I make out is that 9W will initially use A340 on LHR route, and once A330s arrive they will deploy them on LHR route and move A340 to BRU-EWR route.

I think 9W will use 2 of their A340's to fly BOM-BRU-EWR and the other 1 A340 to operate BOM-LHR, and when the A330's arrive LHR will be upgraded to double daily and new routes will be created!

What are the odds that they will order the 777/787? I wouldn't be too surprised for something like that happening considering all the 737's in Jet's fleet.

Somehow, I have the impression that if the 330/40 mix proves well fo 9W that they might stay rather than including the 777/87 and retraining crew etc.. anyone feel the same?

Great news for Jet/Airbus and the 332, they can certainly use them for India-EU expansion or Eastern expansion to HKG/NRT etc. and eventually onwards flights to both coasts of USA or Canada

Totally agree, though I can see Boeing fighting tooth and nails for a widebody order from Jet. Airbus does have an advantage beign that Jet is leasing the A330/A340. I assume that these jets are all short term leases.

Hey guys,
Given that the range of the A332 is 6,750nm, and that MEL/SYD fall at about 5,400 nm from BOM, do you think it is likely that Jet would consider Australian services??

The discussion so far has focussed on UK/Europe, North America and Asia, but not Australia!

Yes... one of the reasons which hasn't been mentioned yet is the cheap US$$ - the US is putting all efforts to keep it low for the stimulation of exports, Japan is buying US$$ to counter this, the Europeans are happy that the Euro is strong for other reasons (intra-European trade).. I am just wondering what happens if this tactic of the US will bring the suggested benefits in the long term.. if the US$$ remains this week, it will be very difficult for Airbus in the future

If they keep on expanding: yes.. I think there are several factors.. Westwards might be more important, and with AI entering Australia soon, it might be considerate to wait a little.. but I personally would give it two years.. can anyone profile the Aussi-Indians according to their ethnicity/origin FMI? Just wondering about alternative points to BOM

The US really doesn't have to put any effort into keep it low, besides leaving interest rates relatively low and not tightening the money. Trade balances should trend towards zero, unless another country with a favorable trade balance with the US chooses to accumulate US$s or US$ assets.

Fundamentally, the way I look at the way world trade has developed is that as economic productivity improves in a country, the countries government chooses to increase the money supply to avert deflation if domestic consumption isn't sufficient to buy the resultant goods from increased productivity. Asian governments have chosen to pump more of their currency into international markets to allow foreigners to take advantage of their productivity growth.

Quoting Mrniji (Reply 26):

??? I don't know what intra-European trade benefits there are, but the main reason why Europe wants a strong currency is to keep inflation low and to allow them to acquire commodity inputs and overseas assets at a low price.

Now the discussion is becoming very interesting.. there is an alternative economist (pardon me I forgot the name), who argues that Japan's big acquisition of US$$ could be a big problem for the US in teh future, once Japan decides to 'release' its US$$ reserves.. what do you think about this, Atmx? I forgot much of the theory about monetary policy (or I slept during class Big grin ) so rather refrain from comments but use the opportunity so that people like you, who are a little more proficient in this, give me some opinions/insights about a fundamentally interesting topic - maybe you can relate your opinion a liyttle to B and A (and 9W) as example so we don't modify the purpose of this thread

This is where I think Jet can overtake AI, and leave them in their dust.
AI doesn't not have the equipment, and has indicated Australia services would be hubbed via SIN. This IMO would be a disaster, because they would be competing again MH , TG, and SQ.
Granted, they could hub to other points in India, but again, the connectivity of MH, TG and SIA is far superior

Quoting Mrniji (Reply 26):

You mean where people come from originally in India? will try track it down, but not quite sure.
I agree that if Jet played it smart, they should offer Australia services from either BLR or MAA.
They serve 8 points from MAA and 9 from BLR. Only major city not served direct from these at this stage is DEL.

It would be disruptive in the short term for the US (particularly for the retail sector and other sectors that depend on low cost foreign goods), but it would also be disruptive to the Japanese manufacturing sector if they can't find alternative export markets for their products that won't raise trade barriers in response to a sudden influx of, say, Japanese cars or electronics. Ultimately the danger for the Japanese and other countries is that US companies that are under pressure currently from imports in their home markets and aren't competitive overseas will suddenly gain pricing power and the profits to reinvest back into their businesses that will make much more potent competitors in the future. In fact, the US companies that were smart enough to take advantage of lower priced foreign sourced parts and labor to maintain profitability in a period where the dollar was strong will adapt relatively quickly because they maintained profitability and have cash to deal with transition issues. Companies like GM and Ford which were either not smart enough or simply could get their unions to agree to much greater use of foreign sourced parts and labor to maintain profitability in the high pressure environment may eventually be able to use the less competitive environment from a weaker currency to get their houses in order, though they will have problems if their foreign competition quickly ramps up production in the US to maintain marketshare.

Quoting Mrniji (Reply 29):
Europe often argues that the internal European market (inetrnal European trade) is a big generator of wealth

But what does a strong currency have to do helping internal trade? It makes it more likely that non-EU sourced goods will be more competitive in Italy than something made in Germany.

I take that back. The 9W route map is deceiving. Here's a run down of possible non-stop connections from MAA and BLR.

From MAA
195 weekly services to 12 destinations:
Ahmedabad / Bangalore / Colombo Bandaranaike Apt / Delhi / Goa / Hyderabad / Kochi (IN) / Kolkata / Madurai / Mumbai / Port Blair / Pune

From BLR
186 weekly services to 10 destinations:
Chennai / Coimbatore / Delhi / Goa / Hyderabad /Kochi (IN) /Kolkata
Mangalore / Mumbai / Pune

Hmmmm, given that CMB services and the relatively big Sri Lankan community in Australia, especially MEL, MAA likes like a good options.

what do u think mrniji?

So far atleast for the next 3-5 years we will see them with Leased A330s/340s.
And then maybe the 777/787 will enter the arena

BTW, how are they doing on their loads on BOM-SIN --they are just about to complete one month of operations, and what about their MAA-KUL flight.

I will source some passenger movement data and post it on here, but I think there is sufficient traffic between Australia and India for 3-4 services per week stand alone by another carrier ie. 9W, let alone 6th freedom traffic.

A friend of mine is travelling London-Melbourne return for 570 pounds [taxes included]. that converts to A$1500. I wonder what a fare UK-India return is??

To give you some idea of prices, to travel between MEL/SYD and India between Nov and March, you would be lucky to find anything for less than $1600. For the rest of the year, fares are about A$1200-$1300.

So I guess my point is that yields between India and Australia are reasonable, and the market is growing quickly. Any feeder traffic from UK/Europe is simply icing on the cake..

Agreed: last year when QF launched operations to BOM in the off season the price was around Rs 30,000 all inclusive [return].
Whereas, in Dec the fare went upto Rs 52,000 all inclusive [return]
and even when i looked for a seat for my uncle in october i could not find a seat till the 1st week of Jan. and was forced to book him MH which were giving a free 2 day stop over at KUL for around the same price.

sept 2005?
all official reports indicate that deliveries will be may 2006.

as a side issue, i know that peak season for India-Australia travel tends to be Nov to April.

Is this the case for India in general, to the USA and Europe as well??

That was in reference to S2 or Air Sahara which is Indias second private carrier.

yes, that's what i mean. sept 05 seems like an awefully short lead time.

The following is from ATI:

Air Sahara looking at 777s and A330s for London service
(12May05)
Privately owned Indian carrier Air Sahara hopes to finalise a deal within the next few weeks to lease widebody aircraft which it needs to launch scheduled passenger services to London Heathrow.

The carrier will acquire either Airbus A330s or Boeing 777-300ERs, Air Sahara president Rono Dutta told journalists at a briefing in Singapore today to promote the arrival of the airline¢s first scheduled service to Singapore.

He says the carrier wants to get three widebodies this year and three or four next year and is negotiating leases on the aircraft ?but hasn¢t signed anything yet?.

?In the next couple of weeks? the carrier hopes to sign leases for this year¢s widebodies and in September use the aircraft to launch a daily non-stop service to London Heathrow.
