I Know Its Only A Story........but

Tue May 10, 2005 11:37 pm

First of all this could go in here or non av or military!!

Watching 24,4th series and got to the bit where the F117 takes a pop at the Air Force 1 ( dont tell me what happens next!!!)

I was always under the impression that AF1 had so much anti warfare gizmos on it that this sort of thing couldnt happen (or is it normal hollywood who cares attitude?)

They SEEM to be keeping to reality with the F117 not being seen so good on radar, but what about the chaff etc being deployed?. Its not like they didnt have warning and why didnt the missile hit one of the fighters?

But like i said its only a story

I understand your interest, and I won't tell you what happens. . .let me just say this: there isn't an actual CTU anywhere in the U.S. Makes for great entertainment though.

Chaff, flares and ECM decrease the chance of a hit. They don't eliminate it.

Same with stealth. Put enough radar in the air and on the ground and you will find stealthed aircraft. They're not invisible to radar, just harder to detect.

Some people mistakenly think the F-117 and the like, are real-world interpretations of Wonder Woman's airplane....Remember? (Or am I showing my age?) For those who might not know, It was invisible.

"Stealth" is a relative term...compared to aircraft they replaced, they return a significantly smaller echo. The key word here being "Smaller", not invisible.

Fear not, the F-117 has zero air-to-air capability (well, you could ram it into another aiprlane but that's about it), and not all that much air-to-ground but I digress. If it was a real fighter with A2A weapons it would be able to shoot down the VC-25A. Granted, it might take a few tries to succeed though (did I mention the ramming?), due to the IRCM and possible radar countermeasures fitted to the tricked out 747. Remember, your average fighter jet has the same countermeasures as AF1 and then some, plus the ability to maneuver agressively, and they can still be shot down by their rival counterparts.

The main purpose of the IRCM on AF1 is defeating should-launched SAMs and the like, i.e. simple weapons systems that can be easily acquired and moved without being detected before the shot is fired.
