New Mexican Start-up, Vuela!

Wed May 11, 2005 2:07 pm

Finally Perdo Aspe (ex. Secretary of Finance in 88-94) has finally been authorized by Mexico's Secretary of Transportation. Vuela Compañía S.A. de C.V. (75%) is the new name of this start up in association with Taca Group (25%).

The airline will be based at TLC and they will start operations before year ends or early 2006. They will fly a fleet of 6 A320's and they will grow it till they reach 25 A320's.

Perhaps this has certain relation with TA's recent A order.

I really hope they find some way to provide inexpensive, convenient ground transportation between TLC and Mexico City.

Once Again with this issue.

I Think that for many people living in west side of the metropolis, (look not Mexico City precisely) TLC is by far more convenient than MEX, even with the current Ground Transportation Infrastructure (Bus Service and Highways). I don t think that time or distance could be a major issue regarding the success of TLC. Competitive fares and an un- busy Airport will make TLC the choice for many "Defeños", besides our own Market.

I dont know how many more Airlines besides Continental and This new one will operate from TLC in the near future, but now they have a competitive advantage.

As a chilango not living on the western suburbs of Mexico City (Santa Fe, etc.) time or distance to get from where I live (or work) into/from TLC is not a major issue for me. However, the convenience (or inconvenience) of getting there certainly is a major issue for me. Are taxi fares to TLC airport comparable to those from within Mexico City to MEX airport? Is parking there inexpensive? If I'm going away for more than a couple of days, I would certainly not like to leave my car at the airport, be it MEX or TLC (nor do I think a friend will gladly drive me all the way to TLC for a 7 A.M. departure, or late-night pick-up). I have no doubt that flights out of TLC will be a success, but if they really want to tap the whole of Mexico City market (and not just the Toluca area, or the western suburbs of Mexico City) some kind of convenient transportation will have to be offered (a la Ryan Air), IMHO.

If I will save 50 bucks on the airfare, but spend 30 extra bucks just getting there, it will certainly not be worth all the hassle for me.

Wow, another airline. Hmmm I wonder if there will be a lot of confusion between Avolar and Vuela. I can just see people getting confused. I guess the battle of the LCCs is about to start in Mexico.

I insist someone should do a "Park-n-Fly" thing. You park in Santa Fe and a shuttle bus takes you to TLC every hour or so (okay, or whenever there is a flight). It would be a very convenient service for passengers and a great business for the owner of the Park-n-Fly.

As for a "friend who would gladly drive you to TLC for a 7 A.M. departure", something tells me you would fly to IAH from TLC with CO and, as we all know, the Galleria is just full of great stores, so...

I was planning to do that last month, but finally never did, precisely because of the hassle of getting to TLC at such early hour. Your Park-n-Fly idea is what I think would be necessary.

Another thing that Vuela can offer is shuttle bus service to the bus stations in Mexico City. That way they have a wider reach of customers from other parts of the region to fly with them. I'm sure they can come up with some deal with a bus company as there are like a million of them in Mexico.

The name of the airline means "Fly" in English. How much time did they spend thinking of a name? Five minutes?

I don't mean to come across as critical, but I chuckled when I read the name of the new airline.

Mr Taca, you have to let people express what they think and not confront them.

There is nothing bad with the name, but since there is going to be one called AVolar, probably I would have chosen some other name.

Kind Regards

You´re right. That´s why I´m freely expressing what I think about reply 12. I recognize that I´m just a little "conflictive", maybe because of my profession.

Me too. Because of the similarity between both names.
But they already choose it. So there is nothing we can do right now.

This kind of service is already available by "CAMINANTE" bus company from its own terminal in Toluca to MEX Airport on an hourly basis. They also offer service to UIA (Universidad Iberoamericana) in Santa Fe for students living in TLC attending that Campus.

Certainly Caminante will be offering this service from SAta Fé and some other points in Mexico City to TLC. The current fare for a q/w ticket is 100 pesos some 9.00 USD and they offer a quite good Service.

My apologies. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I just thought it was kind of amusing that it had such a simple name.

Think about it. If a new airline named "Fly" started in the US, I'm sure that many people would probably have something to say about its name.

I like "Vuela" ... simple to the point and not overly dramatic or classic. Let's just hope it does not go defunct like "Volare" over in Italy...

Any word on routes? only within Mexico / Central America or U.S.? etc...

Cory, thing is if you're a spanish-speaker you'd see that Vuela actually sounds nicer than "fly". Not trying to sound dramatic, but the word "vuela" has a certain 'something' that makes you think of freedom, besides sounding pleasing to the ears. On the other hand, "fly" makes you think of something quick, short, just like the word, and not very meaningful that is if you don't think of a fly -the animal!

I actually much prefer Vuela, to Avolar..which just sounds dumb. However the perfect thing was if "A Volar!" (Let's Fly!) was the slogan used by Vuela, the airline ..me thinks.

Nope, they did fly but to other carriers. I remember there used to be one sitting at MDW for about two weeks when the VuelaMex concept went down the drain. They had nice livery.

Does anybody know if Vuela will be adhering to any FF/loyalty program right away?

For a start-up, there are problably not very many options of joining neither of the big alliances (which would make her quite interesting)... IMVHO, either Vuela starts its own program, or joins a commercial program (like, for instance, what about crediting double or triple AMEX Membership Rewards points?)

They are supposed to be a LCC, so there is no need for a FF program immediately. You also have to consider the TLC fact. That makes them a point to point carrier, since there is no connecting traffic. So why will they want to join an alliance...

If they decide to get one, they can take DISTANCIA FF program and extend it to Mexico...
