The Missing 727?

Wed May 11, 2005 2:50 pm

Tried Searching, but could not find anything. Does anyone know what ever happened to the ex AA 727 N844AA that was stolen in Africa. Did they ever find it, or is it still missing?
Thanks

AFAIK it was never found.

Did here a first hand account from somebody that worked on that aircraft in Africa turning it into a tanker.

His theory seems most plausable. The owners of the airplane who where repo-ing it, tried to sneak out of dodge without paying the airport fees the renter had generated to the local generalisimo who had it shot down over the ocean.

It is a pretty interesting story, missing airplanes, shady dealings, Malaria and the South African Mob.

I remember starting a thread on this last year, following a B727 crash on take off, which was totally overloaded.

If I remember correctly the FBI thought the B727 that crashed was the same one that disapperared while on a ferry flight from Africa with an american pilot on board. An AC pilot said that he saw a B727 with the same rego of the one that went missing, a few months before the crash

According to this story the plane was later spotted - but is now again missing.

An actually interesting topic that isn't AvB only gets 5 responces. It's hard to believe that people can't keep track of an airplane of that size? It's gotta be out there somewhere. I'd imagine someone in the US knows where it is, too many dang spy satellites to not know where it is.

I imagined it had crashed in the sea since I never heard anything again.

However having read the link on reply 5, the plane is now wearing another reg, has been resprayed.. and this is in Africa so... perhaps some people might have seen it but will be hard to prove it was the missing aircraft.

Yes, I suspected that it was the crashed one in Togo, but it seem like it wasn´t. Still think Lebanese dealers got it, lot of questionable aircrafts in
Africa, perhaps this one was used as parts to fix some aircraft standing
in DRC?
The US citizen that presumed to have flewn it from Angola is still missing?

The FBI feared the B727 was stolen, with the American pilot for terrirost acts, which resulted in a world wide search, every airport was notifed, but the B727 was never found

If its always changing its rego then it can prove hard. If its always changing its rego after it has been found then its obvious its in the wrong hands

Weird situation. No mention of the pilot in any of this. This story made USA Today (I think) about a year or so ago. Ne mention of anyone ever finding it again, but if it has a paint job and a new reg, anything could happen.

I agree with the comment that if they keep re-reg'ing it, that could spell real trouble down the road.

Hey guys!

Any airplane can actually be lost in Africa and them come back latter on! That reminds me that in mid 90's I was in OGMA at Alverca doing a study and suddenly we arrived to an hangar to look to an airplane that was inside, it was Congo/Brazzaville government 727 that was parked waiting to pay the debts they had!!!
