United 601-CHAOS Casualty?

Wed May 11, 2005 4:46 pm

United Flight 601, scheduled to depart Washington-National for Chicago-O'Hare at 6:00 this morning, has been cancelled for some mysterious reason not stated by United. Can somebody please confirm, deny, or question whether that is CHAOS-related?

You would think, though, that it would make more sense to send earlier flights, and then cancel a later one when you (undoubtedly, at ORD) need that slot later in the afternoon...am I crazy?

When the flight is cancelled due to a "MECH"(chanical), you don't usually get to have that choice.  Wink

Flight 620 ORD-DCA was canceled on the 10th it would have overnighted at DCA and done 601 this morning.

OPNL-There are five flights that RON at DCA, and all of them return to ORD in the morning. Therefore, there are four other aircraft that could get out before you have to cancel a flight. Now, anybody planning to connect to MLI, MBS, BNA, FWA, SDF, SBN, ATW, CID, LEX, IND, STL, LAN, TVC, LNK, SPI, SFO, LAX, PDX, OKC, SNA, DEN, TUL, MEM, MSP, DFW, FSD, ICT, SAN, IAH, MCI, SEA, PHX, SGF, OMA, or DSM from that 6:00 AM flight from DCA is absolutely screwed, and forced to wait until the next flight...

There is no CHAOS.

Refer to AFA web site.

Ummm...I looked at the link and it says "You have overwhelmingly authorized the use of CHAOS" and in another section says "CHAOS will be used to remove this leadership" -paraphrased cause I am lazy...

It says towards the bottom

"It should be clear that we are not on strike at this time"

These UA unions finds themselves in a difficult legal spot. The court specifically mentioned that the termination of the pension plans are not grounds for any wildcat work stoppages or enmass labor actions. Thus they must thread very lightly while it considers what if any legal recourse they might have.

The next interesting issue will be todays 1113 hearing with AMFA and the IAM regarding the permanent imposition of the temporary cuts they have been working under for the last few months as they have failed to come to consentual agreement with the company.

I think it is now clear that AFA was a lot more bark than bite. They got themselves back into a corner where they either had to strike or lose face, and they obviously chose not to strike. They may have saved their company, but they probably lost at least some of their credibility.

Create Havoc Around Our (sic) System...it describes AFA's strike pattern, to randomly target flights without warning, to prevent United from being able to hire scabs, strikebreakers, replacement workers, whatever you want to call them.

The issue is not just the aircraft, but the crews and bookings as well. If the 0600 flight was the most lightly booked, they inconvenience the fewest passengers.
