Caption says it's a fly by at an airshow. I've seen similar passes performed by a FedEx freighter and (many) military planes.

Southwest used to have a commercial during the 1970s in which a FA in a short skirt was walking towards a camera when a 737 buzzed overhead so low that it caused a few hairs to raise off her head. Cool commercial!

Think this one is real, if you look at the runway you can just about see the shadow of the 737, which i think would be particulary hard to do on photoshop edit.

Always one of my favorites too!

See it at: http://www.southwest.com/about_swa/advideo.html and I believe it's the first one at the top of the list, dated 1972....

In WW2 there was a desert based Hurricane pilot, his showpiece was to belt down the runway and at the point of take off rather than climb he would retract his gear, fly level for a bit and then climb.

Hooray for crazy pilots (as long as I'm not in there with him!)  Wink

I believe he was taking off and stayed low after gear retration.. Much safer than performing an approach with a gear up and then executing a fly-by!

Hi guys

Let me reassure you that it's very unlikely that this photo is faked. The photographer is one of Iceland's most known aviation photographer and I highly doubt that he would upload a faked photo. The pilot flying the aircraft was most probably Mr. Arngrimur Johannsson, the founder of Air Atlanta, who has been flying all kinds of aircrafts for decades and quite capable of making such a low pass.

The WN video was pretty impressive, (and hte 737 flying overhead was nice too Big grin)

you think that WN vid was trick videography? I mean, it was as low flyby ut that gal underneath didnt even flinch when the 737 roared over. Even if you Botoxed her entire forehead, she had to at least react when that plane flew over!

I don't know if you are intentionally referring to a certain video or not, but there was in fact an Air France aircraft that tried to climb after a low pass and crashed into a forest. The video is somewhere on www.flightlevel350.com but I tried to find it and was not successful. Maybe someone else can try their luck. I believe it was an Air France A320. It came in for a low pass and did not climb soon enough and the angle of attack was too low. The aircraft just plunged into the trees at the end of the runway.

at the air and sea show in Fort Lauderdale a few years ago, a SAA 744 did a couple of passes over the water once at real slow approach speed and then another one at max performace. It kicked up a wake like a fighter.

Flightlevel350 has removed most of their crash videos for some reason. I tried finding the one of the MD-80 test landing again, and never found it. The AF one disappeared too. By the way, nice pics everyone! I love low passes and love looking at the pictures too.

I have a video of an A320 or 319 doing a "maximum performance" takeoff where they leveled off in ground effect then raised the gear before making an incredible climb. I think I got it off a link from a post about a year ago. If anyone knows of a link to that, that would be great.

This plane is flying low because suddenly after take-off they could not find one of the passengers. Having looked everywhere they decided to look on the ground (without actually landing).
That's why passengers should remain seated and buckled up during flight!!!

Not really, if flown correctly there is absolutely no danger of those airplanes doing very low passes hitting the ground. As long as the speed is comfortably above the normal approach/touchdown speed, the ground effect would require the pilot to push really hard to make the airplane hit the runway.

I remember flying on a Curtiss C-46 Commando at Villavicencio in Colombia a few years, and they did a really low pass down the runway returning to base. The speed was well above normal touchdown speed and the pilot was really having to push quite hard on the column to keep it as low as it was - the natural tendancy with the speed and ground effect is for the airplane to climb, not plow into the ground.

These are usually highlights on mini-airshows that are held once in a while in REK, I witnessed both these low passes, very impressive (Accusations of fakes are ridiculous). I also remember a Dornier 228 and a Fokker F50 doing these. Yes, this appears to be popular in Iceland and is excellent entertainment!
