Info Request - - - Singapore AirlineQ

Sat Apr 15, 2000 10:11 am

Hey there... I am trying to get some infos from folks who have flown on SQ recently. I will be flying from the US to Bali-Denpasar via Singapre on SQ. I was wondering if any of you have flown on either the JFK-FRA-SIN or the EWR-AMS-SIN route in economy or raffles class. Any comments on service, seating, food, etc would be greatly appreciated   Also, what do you fly over on the Europe to Singaore segment?? How is the 744??!

Also if anyone has flown on SQ from Changi to DPS, any info in that area would be well recieved too.

Thanks!

I haven't flown the sectors you are talking about but I flew LHR-SIN-MEL with SQ in Raffles class last December. Overall they were very good but I had heard so many great things about them I think I was expecting more.

The new Raffles seats are very good but I thought UA's new Business seats were better. Food is great, service very good but maybe a little forced, Krisworld is good but they seem to have the same shows on all sectors which means the choice is not as great as it may be.

I was recently on a SQ flight and was sorely disappointed. Having not flown them for at least 10 years I eagerly awaited the final leg of our flight with them. We flew Sin to Mel, after having flown from Europe using Lufthansa and Thai. My major criticism was lack of room. When meals were served passengers were asked by flight attendants to stop reclining their chairs as there was no room for the passenger behind to eat!!

Service was okay but I think after flying Thai, they lagged behind in all areas!

The Europe-SIN sector will be on a 744. I have flown MEL-SIN-LHR several times in Raffles and also MEL-SIN-AMS. I have always found the flights comfortable. The service is attentive, the food's fine and the entertainment what you would expect; films, radio and games. It's my first choice for flights to Europe, ahead of Malaysia and Qantas.

Haven't travelled in economy with Singapore, but I think most if not all of the 744s have PTV with games.

Both EWR and JFK flights are serviced by 744s with SQ. Its only Malaysian that uses the 777-ER on the EWR route. The last time I flew SQ the service was much the same as Malaysian - which is the norm for carriers from that region - they have all won their string of awards and would beat virtually any other airline in the world in my book.

By the way 'Airbus fan' - I think its great that Malaysian and Singaporean crew ask passengers to straighten their seats during the meal as BA certainly doesn't and I've often sat behind an oaf who has made eating a lesson in contortion. I wish more airlines made this point when serving meals.

SQ and MH both have more legroom than most European carriers I have flown on - which is odd since the majority of Singaporeans/Malaysians tend to be rather smaller in stature.

The only criticism about SQ that made me abandon them a few years ago was the spate of delays that were occurring. I was delayed out of London, Singapore AND Kuala Lumpur on one outbound journey and on the return my 744 had to return to Singapore due to 'technical faults' about 2 hours out of Changi. Not only that, that same year I flew HKG-SIN aboard its (then) new 777 and again we turned back about 1 hour out of HKG. Perhaps a coincidence but a few friends have had similar experiences with SQ flights turning back. This may well have been ironed out by now - but its rather late as I'm now building up FFpoints with MAS.

I was also rather disturbed to read a while back on this forum a rumour about 16 SIA pilots resigning due to safety fears at SIA...perhaps a rumour but I haven't had much luck with that airline - it has to be said.

I don't believe any SIA horror storries about lacking safety until anybody can show me proofs.

I always enjoyed SIA, their food, service, comfort is great, Krisworld Entertainment system is one of the best worldwide.
