Jet2 - Why Not Operating To Brussels?

Fri May 13, 2005 7:33 pm

Hi all,

After checking the current Jet2 network, I was wondering whether it would be a good move to start flying to Brussels.

The argument that Brussels is an expensive airport doesn't really count as Jet2 are also flying to Amsterdam and Paris.

For example: LS have 13 weekly flights from LBA to AMS, and 19 weekly flights from MAN to AMS. That's a total of 32 weekly flights from the UK to AMS.

Both routes are operated in competition with KL.

Paris sees one daily flights between LBA and CDG (I thought that LS had more flights to CDG, as I think I saw more than 1 LS B737 last time I was in CDG). This flight is in competition with the 14 weekly ERJ's of BD.

Compare this to BRU, where BA and SN are codesharing between BRU and MAN, and where BMI are filling 14 weekly ERJ's between BRU and LBA.

I'm quite sure that BRU would be able to sustain both a twice-daily BRU-MAN and a twice-daily BRU-LBA.

Any thoughts about Jet2 starting flights to BRU?

The same applies to WW by the way...

Regards
Frederic

Do you forsee this as a leisure route or for business pax.? I personally can't see enough demand for 2x daily; but of course if you only do 1x daily you alienated business customers who can't do a day return.

The BMI flights are good for the business market. A 1 daily LBA-BRU could do well though, as would easyJet flights if they started to BRU

I don't have information about the performance and yields of SN/BA (BRU-MAN) and BRU-LBA (BD), but I wouldn't underestimate the number of business passengers flying between both destinations.

If you want to attract those, you'll need 2 daily frequencies.

Also EZY are already bothering me for quite some time now. Not only on flights to/from the UK, but also on selected other routes, an EZY service would do well. I once heard that VEX have to keep flying between BRU-GVA (above the several daily SN flights) to avoid a GVA-BRU flight operated by U2.

I agree. Try to find a seat to LBA on BD during the week. Hell... MAN yes, but the prices can be very high if not booked well in advance..

I heard that BRU-LBA is performing very good for BD. That's part of the reason why I suggested a BRU-LBA route for Jet2.

At the time of Sabena's collapse the BRU-LBA route was served 4 times per day (reduced at weekends) with RJ85/RJ100's. Even taking into account that these aircraft may not have been full, and that a number of people on these flights may have been connecting at BRU to/from other SN flights, it still seems a huge drop in capacity to now just have a 3 x weekday service from BD using little 37-seat ERJ-135's.

I suspect that Jet2's 733's could prove too big for 2 x daily LBA-BRU services. The cities of Amsterdam and Paris are far more favoured for short leisure breaks by people in the UK than what Brussels currently is, which boosts the passengers numbers on these routes considerably, though this of course may partly be due to the availability of cheaper air services to AMS and CDG.

If a LCC was to look at this route then perhaps FlyBe may offer the answer with its 78-seat Q400's.

Well if Brussels isn't an option then Poland is by all accounts. According to a Polish source, Jet2 is planning on starting flights from LBA to WAW and/or either KRK or KTW. Apparently Jet2 are very pleased with the LBA-PRG route and want to expand further into Eastern Europe.
