Why Is The UK So Popular For Aircraft Maintenance

Fri May 13, 2005 9:46 pm

Perhaps it's just my perception but for a country where buying a coffee requires you to take out a second mortgage, the UK seems to be very popular for overhaul and maintenance stations for large jet aircraft. There's Southend, Bristol, Manston, Lasham, Kemble and others all providing extensive maintenance, painting and scrapping services for aircraft from all over the world.

The UK has a high amount of expertise in engineering, much like if you want a race car built you come to the UK to build it and if you dont build your race car in the UK the people building them abroad are Brits.

I have to disagree Im afraid, not the part about being good at Engineering, we are, the problem is, soon the work will be put out to the middle east where the cost of an overhaul is far cheaper than it is here........

I belive the factors are:

1. We (UK) do a fine check over the whole aircraft, every new part gets checked etc, and tested, this does however mean that sometimes things get delayed, and possibly the aircraft on the ground for longer, much to the annoyance of the airline who want the plane in the air. With the middle east, they tend to do the job and no more, and that normaly means the aircraft is out on time, no delays etc.

2. From the above you might think that from the middle east side of things, that the procedure could be dangerous, when you look at aircraft today, they are more 'intelligent' than previous types of aircraft, so if there is a problem, the chances are, things will be OK and the plane can get to the ground. However the risk is, is that if its not OK, that is when you relise safety must come second to money.......................

Just my point of view anyway..........
