Another Mad Idea By O'Leary!

Sat May 14, 2005 7:21 pm

The inflight entertainment thing isn't working for Ryanair aparently so looking to generate more revenue O'Leary is looking to sell advertising space, but not in the in-flight magazine but on the doors of the overhead lockers........

What's next, advertising firms of undertakers on the lifejackets?  Wink

If it keeps the fares down, doesn't bother me. I wonder what they company would advertise the lifejackets? Probably some law firm, that way if the a/c ditches in the water, after you put the lifevest on and go for a swim, you've got the phone number at hand for a lawsuit against the airline for crashing the plane... Big grin

Sounds like a great idea, I'm surprised it hasn't been done before.

I don't think it's mad at all. Sounds like a good revenue source to me, and one many airlines could adopt. I think maybe adverts on the drop down trays would also be effective. Thats if they have trays.

They have, it used be on the back of the seats, but that's where the safety card is now.

This isn't a new ideas. Some airlines here have taken up that idea 2 years ago.

What's sad isn't the "desperation" for money, but the fact that he's looking to use a "3rd world bus air travel style" solution!

The seat headrest cover, the bulkheads (apart from the safety signs), overhead compartment doors, toilet doors... are already advertising spaces! The problem is that the advertising companies are having a hard time filling those spaces!

Air Inter was advertising Gitanes on the overhead racks, I think they had hatches, on Caravelles when I used to fly them out of Paris from Orly in the early to mid 60s.

What happens when FR does away with overhead bins?

It can't be that far off.

Ryanair has done away with the seat pockets which everyone thought was a silly idea and now they're beginning to realize why... Where do you put the inflight mag, menu and escpecially the sick bags .... If you have a turbulent flight, of course everythings strewn about the floor, a couple of sick passengers, and what do you get... yes, the sick all over the place because the poor person was unable to find a bag in time. Need I say more? The health and safety people aren't to pleased about this.

I was thinking. Why do they put cushions on the seats, can't they just make them metal like the NY underground.

That would save them the money buying them and it would only need a good wipe-down. And they can put in linoleum floors.

Good way to save some money!

Why is this so bad. If it keeps the fares low we, the customers, are the winning ones. And if he goes one step further and paint alll his aircraft like busses with advertisings, we the customers and the SPOTTER, are the winners,

Also the threads about the boring EURO-White would have an end.

As far as I'm concernes Ryanair ranks eight up there with PanAm as one of the most profitable and innovative pioneering airlines in the system today.

PA's situation and FR's situation are world apart (no pun intened)....PA's downfall was due to many reasons, (landing slot rights, CEO losing focus and probably not understanding severity of situation, etc.)....FR's doing quite well..

I think the most important thing to get out of this is that FR is allowing people to choose how they want to fly.....many people want ultra-no frills and super cheap flights ( FR )...some want no frills but a little extra (U2), and some want extra pampering and service ( BA )....let the people choose.....I fail to see why does everybody love to bash FR  confused ...

personally, I prefer flying BA due to its central location and convenience, and I don't mind paying a little extra....there are others who disagree and fly U2.....

it seems the United States market at least is voting with its pocket book at the LCC's such as WN, F9, B6,etc..........and we are seeing this in Europe, Asia, etc.....

This is what I am talking about. Who the hell wouldn't want to be profitable?!? This is a business, the goal is to make money, not fly to some symmetric route map that serves your podunk hometowns with colourful airplanes. If O'Leary is making money, then f!$#%$ing kudos to him. At least someone is making money flying planes. Unlike the  old  Legacy carriers in the US...

at least Ryan Air is a low cost carrier... Air China, the official airline of China, the one that flies the Chinese leaders around the world, has a major electronic company's advertisement on the back of the tray table.... so, if u're not using the tray table, you'll see the company's name and logo right in front of your eyes.... to make it seems less tacky, the added the english & chinese version of "please fasten your seatbelt while seated" at the bottom of the advertisement

America West has advertising on their tray tables. It's well done, not too obtrusive. Their CFO has said that while it's not a huge money-maker, it's profitable and worth doing.

Exactly - All the bashing of FR is crazy. The idea of any business is to make money. If they can do that by (what seems to some people to be) outlandish methods then good on them. However if they go too far then the market will punish them with people using other carriers. It seems to be working for them at the moment.

An airline is no different to a bus in that its purpose is carrying people. It is not there for the enjoyment of aviation fanatics like us and the days of flying being an "event" for passengers have long gone.

I flew on Ryanair this January and they even advertise on the sick bags.

I wouldn´t even be surprised when they "upvalue" their announcements by adding some space for commercials:

"Ladies and gentlemen, Ryanair and ........ welcome you onboard"
"Our safety instructions are presented by ....... "
"Captain ........, whose favorite beer is ....., and second Officer ......., who likes to eat at .........., welcome you "

And in the lavatories is a lot of space to advertise, too.

Ok, its about 0200 local.

Of all the Ryanair bashing I hear, this makes no sense. Pay to not have adds or not... Word will get around. Now I can understand some bashing. e.g., Not having ready air sickness bags would be silly... Getting rid of the recline... ok, that made economic sense. I'll be curious to see how they "sink or swim" based on their uber LCC plan. One might not impress a date on their flights... but if that allows a student or other cheapo fly, let the free market rule.

The seat cushions are used as a flotation device incase of an emergancy...
