After 20 Years Air India Flies To Canada

Sun May 15, 2005 8:59 am

TORONTO: After the bombing of its passenger airliner Kanishka two decades ago, Air India will start its service from Toronto to India from tomorrow, fulfilling a long-standing demand of Indians living in Canada.

Air India's first service from Toronto to New Delhi via Birmingham and Amritsar will take off on Sunday fulfilling a long-pending demand of Indians living in Canada, a spokesperson for the airlines said.

The flight will operate three days a week. Special security measures have been taken to protect the aircraft and passengers and to prevent incidents like the 1985 bombing, said the spokesperson.

Kanishka, a Boeing 747 flight from Toronto to Mumbai via London was blown off the Irish coast in the Atlantic ocean on June 23, 1985, killing 329 passengers, mostly Canadians.

The new Boeing 777 Air India aircraft will land at the Toronto's Pearson International Airport on May 15 evening with special guests Trilochan Singh, Chairman, Minorities Commission and parliamentarians M S Gill, Rita Sodhi and Balwant Singh Ramuwalia.

Interesting that you post that pic as I believe that is the ex-SQ plane that replaced the fallen Kanishka.

I wonder if they will check in at the desks at the far left end of T3 where LY does and use that special security room in the back like LY makes their pax use. The room has a special x-ray machine and you have to take your baggage there to get x-rayed before it goes down to be loaded.

Just saw it on ZEE News, they are reporting AI is going to use a 747 heh

What will the return routing look like? the same reversed? or would it be YYZ-BHX-DEL-ATQ instead?

it is going to be exact reverse, else they'll have to make arrangements for crew at ATQ, and bring empty plane to DEL to start journey afresh.

Air India did serve YYZ in the 90s - so all these headlines etc are misleading, an too much hype is made in connex to the 1985 bombing. Of course, it is breaking news.. See also

True Aseem.

For some reason my brother keeps telling me that the ZEE reporter said YYZ-BHX-DEL-ATQ on the return! to me it didnt make sense other than perhaps they want the UK/Canadian passengers on the return flight to go through customs at DEL.

Would it be possible to do the Crew change in DEL, load up DEL pax and head to ATQ and so on more like a DEL-ATQ-BHX-YYZ-BHX-DEL cycle?

How are the facilities looking at ATQ? I saw the huge construction project going at the airport in january.

Anybody knows if AI is about to resume its services to FCO too? A few months ago a Milan-based AI representative told me they probably would have flown to Rome again, but I heard nothing about that since then...

I am very surprised that AI hasn't served Canada for all those years. Yes, there was an act of terror upon AI with flights from Canada (and a close call as to a second a/c of AI) but I find the long time without such service to have been a very bad business decision. Perhaps the stricter requirements for transit visas in the USA along with increasing demand, drove AI to finally return service to Canada.

See the thread starter and my Reply # 8.. AI did serve YYZ in the 90s and withdrew due to operational reasons (fleet constraints) - so the time is not so long as assumed (but definitely long enough  Wink )

Two things -
1. As of 11:45am EDT, FlyteComm is showing AI187 arriving at YYZ at 5:54pm
2. Assuming the date on the A.net photo is correct, Air India flew to YYZ until at least September 1997.

Assuming the date on the A.net photo is correct, Air India flew to YYZ until at least September 1997.

AI opened Canada service in 1982 operating 2x weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays to Montreal Mirabel.

Service to Toronto was inaugurated in January 1985 and the service became once weekly with a routing of BOM-DEL-FRA-YYZ-YMX-LHR-DEL-BOM operating on Saturdays.

Service to Canada was suspended indefinitely from June 30, 1985 following the bombing of AI 182 operated by VT-EFO by Canadian-based extremists.

Toronto services were reinstated in 1989 with a twice-weekly routing of India-LHR-YYZ-LHR-India.

In summer of 1992, the services were operated as daily flights with routings of India-LHR-JFK-YYZ-JFK-LHR-India on 5 days of the week (no 5th freedom JFK-YYZ and pax in sterile transit) and India-LHR-YYZ the remaining two days(may actually have been 5x total with 3x via JFK and 2x via LHR, I don't recall for sure).

Service was cancelled in the fall of 1992 and reinstated in summer of 1993 using a mixture of 742s and 743s. The service switched to a 742/744 mixed operation in 1993. VT-ESO even made her maiden revenue flight as AI 188 from YYZ-LHR-BOM in December 2003 after a ferry PAE-YYZ.

The last flight to YYZ was in Octover 1997 when the service was suspended due to lack of LHR slot availability when Air India's Chicago service began to be routed via London.

It looks like today's flight departed BHX nearly 1 hour late.

The FedEx hill is out of commission right now Aseem --> they're adding lighting to 23/05 so there's nothing landing or departing from it right now.

I just talked to a friend who is at YYZ, and they're currently using the 24's for arrivals, which sucks b/c it's hard to get good photos down there.

I will be there though  Smile

Somehow an irony that with the new bilateral (and even with the old) only AI is using 5th freedom, and no British carrier ex-India!

"Wong" information? Air India's press releases are generated out of China now? Inconceivable!  Smile

However, according to this article (from China, interestingly enough) cites the New Delhi-based "Indo-Asian News Service" as the originator of the misinformation. (You may cross-check this by going to http://www.eians.com/ and clicking on "Aviation" under "Topics".) It appears the world's press (possibly including the BBC, if they had the same error) relied upon an Indian news agency to supply them with the correct information, and it was wrong.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2005-05/16/content_2961457.htm
NEW DELHI, May 15 (Xinhuanet) -- The first Air-India flight to Toronto in 20 years took off from here Sunday and will fly to the Canadian city via Amritsar and Birmingham, Indo-Asian News Service reported.

Indian Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel flagged off flight AI-187 that will operate from New Delhi on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Air-India suspended services to Canada after an aircraft on a Toronto-Mumbai flight via London was blown up in mid-air in 1985, killing all the 329 passengers and crew on board.

Frankly, I'm not sure why AI even has First Class any more. They should merge J and F into a premium J Class product.

Tough call on that. Right now AI's first class fare from the US to India is roughly the same as business on most euro airlines. So you could say their first is like a premium business but called first. Given that AI doesn't have a premium image with most, having a discounted business and first class at least gives a reason for premium pax to fly them. A friend of mine went to India with his wife for vacation and flew AI (switched from BA business) only because they could fly first in the price of business. They loved the flight and liked the fact they flew first.

I just talked to a friend who is at YYZ, and they're currently using the 24's for arrivals, which sucks b/c it's hard to get good photos down there.

The large crowd in the big parking lot on Carlingview didn't seem to be having any problems getting photos. What don't you like about it?

Tough call on that. Right now AI's first class fare from the US to India is roughly the same as business on most euro airlines. So you could say their first is like a premium business but called first. Given that AI doesn't have a premium image with most, having a discounted business and first class at least gives a reason for premium pax to fly them. A friend of mine went to India with his wife for vacation and flew AI (switched from BA business) only because they could fly first in the price of business. They loved the flight and liked the fact they flew first.

Though I agree with Jaysit on shunnuing the first class (indeed, I do not see any reason for keeping 1st at all: see http://www.airliners.net/discussions...eneral_aviation/read.main/2095524) , this is a very good argument I heard from someone else, too.. someone told me that he was travelling for his company CDG-EWR and that his company put him on AI as their 1st was cheaper than CO/AF biz.. this is an interesting topic to discuss (I could imagine my fellow Punjus to leave the 1st class in a mess after leaving the plane  )

BA777-236, fantastic photo! As usual, a very nice contribution of yours to a.net! Thanks!!

Edit: Btw, anyone know where the DASH of Air-India has disappeared?
Edit two: FYI: an interesting article in the Hindu Business Line on the flight, and its meaning for the Panjus:

AI is using the desks in the 400 section of T3. That is at the very far left end. Usually only LY, MA, KL, AF check in there. If you go all the way to the end of that mini check in area there is a door that leads to a smaller secondary screening room. El Al has all their pax take their baggage there where it is scanned/x-rayed and cleared, only then does it go down to the aircraft. It is not uncommon to see security agents open people's bags and remove everything if they saw something suspicious. Here is a pic of was able to snap of the security room. AI is using the same precautions as El Al.

You know what? I totally was thinking of somewhere else -- I was at Arizona's with everyone else hahaha.

I was thinking of the spot on whatever road it's called where the police ALWAYS ask you to leave (the one that goes right by the edge of the 24's). My bad, totally. HAHA
