Seeking FWA Terminal Layout 1950s-1980s

Mon May 16, 2005 5:55 pm

I am seeking information about the layout of FWA's terminal from the postwar years through the 1980s (before FWA's 1996 rebuild).

I am interested in how the terminal was laid out over the years at FWA/Baer Field as the airport evolved. Any maps, diagrams, or other info would be helpful. If you know anything about FWA from the past, please let me know!

Thanks!
SmithAir747 (FWA is my home airport BTW).

As a former resident of the Summit City, perhaps I can help you a bit.

In 1972 when we moved to FWA, Baer Field was served by just DL & UA. UA to hubs in CLE, DEN and of course ORD.Generally 3 flights to CLE w/cnxnx to East Coast Cities, and 4 or 5 flights to ORD. Most of those years there was also a 1 stop (SBN) 727 flight to DEN. DL was 1 stop ( IND) to ATL and several to/from DTW.

There was only a chain link fence with gates to the aircraft parked on teh tarmac. IIRC the access was thru a doorway adjacent to the former location of the restaurant. This would be close to the current western locations of the ticket counters (United Exp & Am.Eagle)

The area that is now used for mostly t-props, the taller Glass square addition was put on about 1976 or 77. This also gave security more room to operate in the hallway. They were located about 15 feet south of where they are now.

The current arrangement with the jetways and upstairs waiting area I believe was done in either the late 80's or early 90's when the airport was still primerly served by mainline aircrtaft of AA, DL, NW and even US flew Fokkers and DC-9's to FWA for a while. Downstairs was used for Saabs, and such.

There is an area upstairs with some exhibits with the history of FWA as well as Smith field on the north side of the city. If you contact the airport, they might be able to get you some old photos or layouts. Generally very friendly folks in FWA.

SmithAir747:

I've got a detailed 1981 terminal layout. Shoot me an email (in my profile), and I'll scan it tonight, and email it tomorrow.

Response to TAN FLYR:

Thanks for the info!

I remember just a little of what FWA was like in the 1980s (I was there several times--once to see someone off on Piedmont and once to visit the airport); I was just a child then.

The thing I remember most was the all-glass concourse on the ground floor for the regional aircraft, with a doorway on each corner for a gate. I loved the fact that it gave me a 180-degree ramp view as well as a sky view. Also, I remember just two jetway gates upstairs (and nice window views too).

I have visited the museum upstairs, but it did not have much in the way of photos or terminal layouts from the past.

By the way, recently on eBay, I found three old postcards of the FWA terminal exterior--two from the 60s or 70s with the chain link fence and the third one was of the late 70s-early 80s, when the building was dark red with a glass upper level.

SmithAir..I apologize..I had forgoten entirely about Piedmont...they ran a classy operation with the hub at DAY. My Brother in law prefered them whenever he flew to California.
