As a former resident of the Summit City, perhaps I can help you a bit.
In 1972 when we moved to FWA
, Baer Field was served by just DL
to hubs in CLE
and of course ORD
.Generally 3 flights to CLE
w/cnxnx to East Coast Cities, and 4 or 5 flights to ORD
. Most of those years there was also a 1 stop (SBN
) 727 flight to DEN
was 1 stop ( IND
) to ATL
and several to/from DTW
There was only a chain link fence with gates to the aircraft parked on teh tarmac. IIRC the access was thru a doorway adjacent to the former location of the restaurant. This would be close to the current western locations of the ticket counters (United Exp & Am.Eagle)
The area that is now used for mostly t-props, the taller Glass square addition was put on about 1976 or 77. This also gave security more room to operate in the hallway. They were located about 15 feet south of where they are now.
The current arrangement with the jetways and upstairs waiting area I believe was done in either the late 80's or early 90's when the airport was still primerly served by mainline aircrtaft of AA
and even US flew Fokkers and DC-9's to FWA
for a while. Downstairs was used for Saabs, and such.
There is an area upstairs with some exhibits with the history of FWA
as well as Smith field on the north side of the city. If you contact the airport, they might be able to get you some old photos or layouts. Generally very friendly folks in FWA
