What's Happened To This MD-11 @ LAX? (Pic)

Tue May 17, 2005 4:49 pm

Hello,

I took a short trip to Socal this weekend and while at LAX I noticed a very messed up tail sticking up from one of the hangers. After taking a look at the shot I have found that it's a DL MD-11. Or at least in a DL c/s. If not DL then I would bet all in that FX in on that. Does anyone know why the tail of this aircraft is as messed up as it is? (Sorry for not grabbing a better shot, when I departed I was ready but the whole airport was covered in fog)

Thanks for any info,

Matt

Matt,

FEDEX are overhauling the aircraft prior to it entering service - hence the condition of the paint.

Yes I understand that they are overhauling but I don't think they take a whole chunck out of the tail...

Thanks,

Matt

Chunk out of the tail??....

Looks like the engine has been removed, other than that it's just paint stripped off.

You've never been around aircraft maintenance have you..? Aircraft in that condition are normal, they have had panels removed for inspection or repair. With about 10 seconds of research on A.net I found this picture of the aircraft in question....

In this case, the leading edge has been removed.

Is it possible this aircraft has been out in the desert, hence the blanked out titles on the tail and general knackeredness ?

EMBQA:

In the remarks section for the photo it states that the aircraft is going to go to the Fed Ex hangar for freighter conversion. Fed Ex does not do that kind of work. Chances are it's being prepared for a flight to a facility that does that sort of work.

That's a normal location where JR 9's rest inbetween flights/getting MX work done.

I didn't post the photo or add the discription, I only found it in the data base and posted it to offer an answer to UAL777222.

That first shot has quite a bit of heat haze to it as well, making things look a lot worse than they really are.  bigthumbsup

I might be wrong about this, but wasn't that plane sitting there a couple of months ago, in a very similar condition? I remember flying into LAX for Easter, and seeing an MD11, which I assumed was Delta, in that condition.

Aeronavali's operation is in Naples. They add a cargo door, they beef up the main deck floor, and add some other things.

Great pic and thanks for posting it, Boeing764.

Do you know why the engines don't have covers on them? Seems they went to a lot of trouble to seal off the L.G. bay openings but not the engines.

I've been seeing that MD-11 ever since I returned home from Idaho three months ago. I took this picture back in February 1 on a AS MD-80 from GEG:

somehow, seeing that bird in that condition makes me feel something akin to having a chunk of my heart torn out...so sad...  Sad

anyone know why some airlines like AY let these babies go to FX instead of taking them?

Usually when someone asks a question its because they are curious.
I think it is very classless of people (of you) , too rub in the fact that you may or may not know more than the person in question.

Just go to the top and read the replies again , if you dont have any help to offer or dont have anything nice to say. Then SHUT UP!

No, the Aeronavali operation that does freighter mods is in Venice (at the airport, not in the city!).

Actually more than most. Due to United Airlines' policy I am not at liberty to post pictures in a public forum. If you which to have a look please do drop me a line via. my profile. Most of my stuff is C-Checks on widebodies and though there are panels missing, etc, never a whole tail ripped up.

Thanks,

That M11 has been there for about 4 months now. When I went to LAX in Jan it was all ready there.
