Is BA Stopping VS And BMI From Flying To Dubai?

Tue May 17, 2005 7:50 pm

Can anyone explain to me if this is true? Is BA stopping or in anyway standing in the way of Virgin and BMI to operate flights to Dubai.

VS have been wanting to start daily and even double daily flights to Dubai but it seems that BA won't let it happen, is that true?

How do you think BA has any power to 'stop' VS or BD flying to DXB? The only thing that could prevent them is any bi-lateral agreements between the UK and the UAE and I don't think any of these exisit.
VS and BD are free to use their slots as they please. Slots are pretty valuable and scarce at LHR so VS and BD have to use them where they know they will make money. Maybe with the domination of (firstly) EK on the route and (secondly) BA they see it as a difficult market to make money on.

As EK has a massive onward network from DXB (and comeptitive fares and service) most traffic for VS/BD would just be point-to-point.

BA is not / cannot stand in the way of VS launching DXB flights.

VS is widely rumoured to be launching a DXB service at some point - the issue is that they have not got enough planes.

With SYD and BOM recently launched, MAN-MCO ops going to VS (from Air Atlanta), and NAS and HAV launching in a month requiring 2 x LHR B744's moving over to LGW/MAN ops.

They cannot launch anything new until more 346's start coming on line.

VS have got some slots avaiable (BA is babysitting some at the moment), so I think they are just waiting for Toulouse to deliver!

Not for VS who would get a lot of DXB originating pax flying on their trans-atlantic flights. Plus remember if VS comes to DXB, then it will be interlining with EK on the DXB-PAK-DXB routes which will feed its DXB-LHR bound flights + trans-atlantic ones.

BMI too via its LHR hub can take DXB pax all over UK and EU on codeshared UAL-AC trans-atlantic flights.

Its worth mentioning that in PAK, VS and BMI have the same GSA company representing them and out of LHE, VS in 2004 controlled 15% of the trans-atlantic market (according to MIDT figures) by having EK transport its pax to LHR and then them trans-atlantic.

But is not the market well covered---EK have 3-4 daily flights to LHR and 2 daily to LGW, not to mention 3x daily to MAN, soon to be 2x daily to BHX, and daily flights to EDI etc.

Also BA has 17x weekly flights from LHR to DXB.

I personally do not feel there is need to operate more flights on this route

There is LOADS of capacity to DXB, not just out of London but Europe generally.

EK flys to nearly every decent sized airport in europe which would not make an onward connection with bmi via LHR very attractive. Most of the connecting traffic via DXB is EASTWARD to SE Asian/Oz/Indian subcontinent as well and now westward towards the US.

Also Qatar and Gulf offer flights to DXB via their respective mid-east hubs. Etihad is also on the horizon, expanding it's cities served in Europe to its Abu Dhabi hub where it offers a connecting 'luxury coach' service to DXB which only takes an hour and a half.
