CO 777 Diversion Due CLE At 1518 Local

Wed May 18, 2005 4:07 am

Head's up all you Clevelanders...I know its short notice, but if you can catch it, COFlt 11 CDG-IAH, 777-224 (ship #06) is diverting to CLE for a medical emergency.

We're landing on the sixes today, so if you're south of the field, take a look.

Now let's just hope the diversion is successful for the patient.

Has the flight departed CLE yet? My source still shows her over northern Europe (sometimes Flytecomm sucks...)

Well, only my second day on the job and I've already gotten to see a 777 diversion! The funny thing about this one was that after the first medical emergency, the plane got stuck at the gate again by a second onboard. Two medical emergencies on one flight, it has to be rare!

We see quite a few diversions in CLE, especially in the summer when the weather is bad in EWR.

I don't get why the runway is being extended if CLE can handle such a plane already. If I'm not mistaken the runway that is being extended isn't quite done yet?

CLE757--No, I didn't get to see it...I'just started vacation and I didn't find out in time either! That's really something about the second emergency while on the ground. You don't see that too often. And yes, tis the season for diversions!

Andrew-- You've already started then? Great...see you around!

Yeah, we see CO widebodies regularly as diversions. 762s, 764s, and 777s are all in the database at Cleveland.

The extension of the 9,000 foot 6R/24L is so that widebodies can actually fly trans-oceanic. At 11,250 feet, the runway will be much better suited for such flights. 777s can land/depart on either of the current 2 9,000 footers, in fact we've had everything up to the AN-225 on these runways, but an 11,000 foot runway provides more security and a gurantee a heavy jet can have plenty of concrete. As far as I know, they haven't even begun paving for the new 2,250 feet of 6R/24L as they just in the past year opened the full 9,000 feet of the new 6L/24R.

why does the plane divert to CLE as opposed to other airports. Do airlines purposely divert to their Hubs? If it was a medical emergency, wouldn't make more sense to land as soon as possible?

If many flights are diverted to CLE from EWR, is this because passengers can make their connections from CLE as opposed to another non CO airport?

CLE would be roughly in the flightplan for CDG-IAH, so the emergency likely occured when they were near CLE. It makes logistical and financial sense to divert to your hub if able. I doubt it had anything to do with conxns. They probably kept everyone else on the plane to continue on to IAH. Most of the other domestic airports CO serves don't see 777's, so they may not have the gates to handle them or the equipment to push them back. In that part of the country, the only airports that see regular 777 service are DTW, ORD, CVG and IAD. Out of these DTW is really the only thing close to CLE

That's part of it. Most EWR diversions are for wxr, so planes can be diverted for an indefinate amount of time. Landing in CLE allows connections, access to the president's club, and plenty of CO staff to deal with the overflow. NW also often diverts jets to CLE from DTW and UA from IAD. We've seen a few NW 747s and UA 777s around, too.

We've had several diversions of CDG-IAH or IAH-CDG flights in the past.

And for heaven's sake people, CLE can handle heavies, both inbound and outbound!!!!!!  banghead
