I dunno- does oozing pink slime sound better than nothing?

Yuck! Fortunately I haven't flown out of HNL in almost five years. Hopefully there's nothing wrong with catering at OGG. Took a flight out of there a few months ago.

Apparently, Gate Gourmet at HON failed a FDA health inspection. They have a provisional license for 30 days, have to face a reinspection and if they fail, they lose their license. Apparently there were open trash cans near food areas, dirty refrigerators including mold on a door, cockroaches on the floors, staff handling ice with bare hands, and other food handling no-no's. Isn't that apptizing...mmmmmm One question is if it is bad in HON, what about their other locations, or that of other companies...Guess better brown bag it out of HON for a while.

How many airlines use GateGourmet at HNL? I know that CO has their own Chelsea catering kitchen there for their flights; do they cater anyone else as well?

I was wondering the same thing- the article wouldn't say... At any rate, this is a possible silver lining for those of us who are unlucky enough to not have HNL in our travel future, right?

That's pretty disgusting.

Out of curiosity does anyone know how Gate Gourmet's sanitary/food safety performance compares with that of competitors such as LSG SkyChefs?

Also what airlines use GateGourmet out of HNL? I'll make a mental note not to fly them(!)

I believe Hawaiian uses them. I think UA also uses them out of here. AA uses LSG (last I looked) and that was a top notch facility! (I got a tour of LSG about 4 years ago as a Hospitality student at the Univ. of Hawaii)

Sucks to hear that GateGourmet is in trouble. Hawaiian has actually stepped up the food options. Time to start eating before the flight.

If GateGourmet is threatening to close, what's going to be left? LSG and Chelsea? I can see some major expansion in the future for CO's Chelsea if that were to ever occur.

When I was a Catering Security Agent at HP, I worked in the Sky Chefs Facility in PHX. Unfortunately, Sky Chefs employees dont really follow food handling procedures some of the time. When I was there, Ive witnessed food cart handlers actually put ice in buckets with their bare hands, seen employees not wear hair nets, and stuff like that. There are are 18-26 year olds working at the LSG Sky Chefs facility in PHX right now. Makes me wonder how they got their food handlers permit....

Gate Gourmet is located right next to UA's GSE shop and the GSE shop likes to run an a/c truck that spews out black soot every week.

These are the ones I know for sure and the ones I'm not exactly sure of in parenthesis:

GateGourmet: HA, AQ, NW, UA (DL)

LSG: AA, NH, QF, CI (Air Pacific)

Chelsea: CO, TZ (NA, Omni)

IICC: JL/JO, PR, KE

I'm not sure of who does Ryan Intl-Skyservice, AC, or Harmony since I don't see those flights.

Great! ... AQ and HA are the two airlines I fly the most. I didn't see anything strange on the last two flights out of HNL.

As a caterer who puts meals on the planes all I can say is "YUCK" is an understatement.

What were they thinking????

Now the rest of the story - In an article on CNN (today, May 20) a significant number of people were recently sickened by 'food poisioning' on flights catered by Gate Gourmet, tarced mainly to contaminated carrots. Apparently that is what triggered the FDA inspections. While nobody died, some of those whom became ill had to be hospitalized! There are lawsuits being started already (and for justifiable reasons).
