Delta Applies For MCO-CUN

Wed May 18, 2005 7:23 am

The proposed daily service would start November 1st, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Now, 2 things come to mind:
First, this would be Delta's 4 daily 738 flight to CUN (plus a daily 763 and a SaSu 738).
Second, didn't Air Tran apply for this route as well? Oh, what a coincidence (not that I don't like it).

Yes Airtran applied why else would DL want it?

AirTran applied for Saturday service, Spirit applied for daily service, and Pan Am applied for service form Stanford (which counts the same as MCO for a designated carrier). So four airlines have applied, only two will get it. It is DEN/DTW/STL-CUN all over again.

Small correction: It's Sanford  Wink . Nice little airport btw. Honestly, I think this is only a three-way fight, as I can't see Pan Am MkIII.5 getting that route. Also, I'd say Spirit and Delta have an advantage over FL and PA, seeing as they want to operate daily service, and not just once weekly.

Why doesn't DL apply for MCO-MEX? And why did they drop LAX-MEX, and why did they never fly DFW-MEX when they still had the hub there?

They did with CRJ's. Service only lasted about 6 months, if that. It was OH's entrance to the DFW hub.

This is an attempt to prevent FL from running the route. DL has a list of routes they plan to serve and certain events cause that list to change. DL has no need to MCO-MEX city when AM does it 4x per week already. DL puts its code on the AM flight.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Because CUN is presently the goose laying golden eggs for the airlines - so they are going to kill the goose.

See I don't get that...they couldn't fill up a 738 for that route...even with AM codesharing?

Is it? Most of the traffic I see to/from CUN are bulk/wholesale fares negotiated at fares far below the normal published rates.

Two things about Delta's application:

1) Delta will not be the first airline to fly MCO-CUN. Mexicana flew it for years in the late 1990s/early 2000s.
2) Delta actually says that one of the big benefits is that passengers can combine a Walt Disney World vacation with a Cancun vacation on one airline. Since, after all, so many people take annual Disney+Cancun getaways.

A longshot if there ever was one, but Delta should forget about MCO-CUN and apply for MSY-CUN. Have the aircraft route SLC-MSY-CUN or something of the sort.

The twice-weekly 727 charters this summer are booked to at least 150 for every flight. The last flight went out with 162 pax and 200 bags. An untapped, highly patronized market to say the least with no competition.

Hell Steve, your airline should be running that route. Given the loads I see you guys put onto the planes from MSY, F9 is getting a name there and would benefit from MSY-CUN.

Not to mention that CUN is a focus city (sort of) for F9, but should F9 start that route, it would likely be saturday-only service, as is the case on all non-DEN Mexico routes. Delta on the other hand would likely be daily service, using a 738. There are no signs indicating such a service, but most people didn't expect the twice-daily MSY-RDU service either.

Delta mainline did fly nonstop from DFW to both Mexico City and Acapulco during the DFW hub's peak in the early 1990s.

And the chess match continues...

I know that DL wants to protect it's interests, but I'm wondering if it is slighly a retaliation for NK's annnounced MCO-NAS route to start in Nov.

1. And how goes that service? 2. When are the E70 to enter service? 3. When would those routes be likely uploaded?

Shouldn't be much longer now. I would guess the first saturday in June, but that is just a guess.
