LHR Good Spots For Watching Close Up?

Thu May 19, 2005 8:03 pm

I'm taking my girlfriend plane spotting for the first time - she took me train spotting last weekend and wants to go to LHR to spot planes this weekend - where is the best place to spot them? I'm not snapping them - just want to watch.

I think up close rather than long way away - closer is better - are there any spots where you can watch them touch down - how close are they at the photo point in Myrtle Avenue? And where is that?

Any help would be appreciated.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Yes, Myrtle Ave would be your best bet. That is about the closest you can get to actually see them touchdown. When are you going, because they need to be on 27L for you to see them at Myrtle Ave. (they are currently on 27R, but change to 27L @ 3pm)
Hope this helps.

You can stand by the roundabout by the hangers too to see them close up when they are landing on 27R.

Myrtle Ave is over the A30 from Hatton X, then walk along past the BP garage and there is a field on the left (not the fenced off one with the lights in it) - the nice mown grass one a bit further down.

You can also park at the Visitors Centre then walk over the road to watch them on 27R too.

Hope she enjoys it.

How the hell can we discuss LHR vantage points without mentioning our good old favourite the Green Man???

If the weather's sound and they're landing 27L,there's nowhere better to enjoy an hour or two with metal thundering over your head every few minutes.

Add to that good beer and food and I'm sure the other half will suddenly aquire a penchance for spotting.  Smile

Oh,it's got it's own website too.

I just pull up into a little lay by on the A30. It's a disused car park entrance, it's double yellow but no-one cares, you'll be staying in the car anyway.

You have to be driving on the side of the road that goes away from Hatton Cross station. It's immediately after the station itself.

Also, when their taking off 9R, there is a dis-used petrol garage with bollards around it, which come in very handy for standing on and watching the take off queue. Also you get a good view of T5 and some of the a/c at T3.
The police might ask you to move (only if you've got a vehicle with you), but just drive round and come back.
p.s I've only ever seen them do that when their was about 3 or 4 vehicles there. Also depends on what kind of police they are. Some are moany old b*stards with nothing else to do, but most are ok  Wink
