DFW: How Large Will HP/US Be There Now?

Sat May 21, 2005 6:01 am

Can anyone tell me what the combined ops in DFW would look like? Frequencies? Cities served? Number of gates?

US
CLT: 6x 733
DCA: 3x E70
PHL: 4x 733, 1x E70
PIT: 3x E70

HP
LAS: 5x 733
PHX: 4x 733, 2x 757, 1x CR9

That looks like it would probably require 5 gates, but I'm not certain how many they have or how many they'll want. Honestly, I doubt they'll add any more service to DFW.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

Based on their summer schedules --

PIT: 3 daily ERJ-170s (2 daily on weekends)
PHL: 4 daily 737-300s, 1 daily ERJ-170 (slightly reduced schedule on weekends)
CLT: 6 daily 737-300s (slightly reduced schedule, plus CR7s, on weekends)
PHX: 4 daily 737-300s, 1 daily 757, 1 daily CRJ (slightly reduced schedule on weekends)
LAS: 6 daily 737-300s

A total of 23 daily departures to five destinations. Based on these numbers, and on their schedules, I don't see why they won't be able to probably reduce the number of gates they use at DFW from the current six (cumulatively) down to four or five.

US has 3 gates at Terminal B and HP has 3, in the same terminal, next to US. One of HP's PHX arrivals is the red eye, arriving around 0400L on a B-733 or A-319. I doubt they do more than keep the same arrangement. They could drop or connect some flights.

I guess it is all up to the stockholders to approve the merger now as well as the government.

Both will the government allow the merger of two financially struggling airlines? I think that is a big question for US.

Also, don't forget the possibility for new DAL service to compliment the existing synergized DFW service. Envision this:

PHX-DAL: 3x daily CRJ
CLT-DAL: 3x daily CRJ

By using a 50-passenger CRJ, USAirways would be able to bypass the Wright Amendment and start playing in Southwest's own backyard.

Wouldn't a CRJ be on fumes if it is a full load, not to mention in hot weather conditions? At that point your better off running that same CRJ on say a CLT-BNA-CLT-TYS-CLT-SDF kinda schedule to maximize load factor, yield, and weather conditions. If the CRJ runs into any kind of weather on a trip with the range of CLT-DFW, then it really has no holding time, and will have to divert to an alternate.

Does the ERJ have significantly better range than a CRJ?

AAEagle runs ERJ's DFW-CLT and DFW-GSO, and COex runs IAH-GSO and IAH-CLT.

Also, when DL had a DFW hub, they had no problem running RDU-DFW on CR2's, and RDU is further away than CLT.

So I can't imagine US having any problem doing it.

One other thing you might see, if what Jmc1975 mentions comes about, is Air Canada Jazz moving their 3x daily CRJ's on the DFW-YYZ flights to DAL-YYZ, and having US Airways handle the flights, rather than DFW-YYZ with United handling them. Keep in mind that, believe it or not, Dallas-Love Field is a customs rights airport, despite the Wrong Amendment limitations.

I didn't think about DL using skywest in the RDU-DFW market. Wow...my rear end would be on fire after that ride.

Various airlines have tried to run DAL service to hubs using ERJs, Delta Connection to Atlanta and Continental Express to Cleveland, and have never been successful at it. No reason why HP/US will be.
