The Warsaw Convention

Sat May 21, 2005 11:26 am

Hi,

Does anyone have any details on the Warsaw Convention. What exactly does it mean, and has it ever been applied/used?

Sorry if it's a daft question, I was just curious to know more about it!

It gets "used" all the time - it pretty much governs the operation of air transport today, setting out standards and recommended practices for the industry.

I can't figure out why they had a convention in Warsaw. More fun could be had by all it the convention were held in Las Vegas or Orlando.

Just my $.02

RogerThat, I hope that's irony we are dealing with here...

Vegas and Orlando can be fun once, maybe twice, but then there is really nothing to do there  Smile

Returning to the topic, I guess an easy explanation for what the Warsaw Convention is would be that it is the reason you get so little money whenever your airline looses/destroys your luggage. "In the carriage of passengers the liability of the carrier for each passenger is limited to the sum of 125,000 francs. The sums mentioned above shall be deemed to refer to the French franc consisting of 65 « milligrams gold of millesimal fineness 900. These sums may be converted into any national currency in round figures."

However, it did set out some very important rules that are absolutely vital for civil aviation today.
