What Airline Is This?

Sun May 22, 2005 1:11 am

I took this picture in flight in 2003 , I think it was in Indian airspace.
Since I am a newbie aviation enthusiast, I have no idea what airline or plane this could have been.
Any ideas?

It's an A320, I think Indian Airlines:

If it was in india it could be Indian Airlines.

But i bet it was Austrian for the tail design.

Well, it's an A319 or A320, CFM powered. As for the airline, it looks like Austrian Airlines to me, but that's not possible if this was taken in India. No idea what other airline it could be...

I don't think it was Austrian. That is an A320, I am relatively certain of that as the body is too thin and narrow to be an A310. Furthermore, if that were an A320, then I don't know why an Austrian A320 would be in Indian airspace. That is a pretty far flight from VIE! By contrast, an Indian Airlines A320 in Indian airspace makes perfect sense, and I think the reason the tail looks so much like Austrian is because the picture is blurry and out of focus. The big IA on the tail of Indian planes may appear like the white stripe on Austrian tails.

My vote definitely goes to an Austrian Airbus. Indian has an all red tail, not just top and bottom red like Austrian does and like the plane in the picture does.

Well, I have seen a Swiss Air 320 in SIN before (taking musicians on a tour), so it is possible that this Austrian machine was also being chartered, hence being in Indian airspace.

In the first top photo, there is too much white in the middle part of the tail for it to be definitively Austrian. The white band on the Austrian tail is more narrow, or it could be just the angle from which we are seeing it....

But it is definitely not Indian Airlines.

I think the debate is still open.

Besides, what would an A320 of Austrian be doing in Indian Airspace that far from home? That is if it is an A320....looks like it...more so than an A310.

Maybe I'm wrong then, but it sure looks a lot like an Indian A320 to me and I don't know why and I don't know what an AUA A320 would be doing in India.

I'm going to have to agree with the majority and say it's an A320. I'm also 99% sure it's Austrian Airlines, in the old livery, but it would be much more definite if the light were slightly better and we could see that classic blue cheatline.

Stirling, I think it is the angle at which the photo was taken. Is it just me, or do you guys love mystery photos too?

I'm going to vote Indian Airlines. The image is way out of focus, which makes it difficult to figure it out. However, zooming in (enough to see individual pixels) you will find that the top line separating white from red is not straight, as it would be for Austrian. The pattern, however, is consistent with an Indian Airlines tail way out of focus.

Only by looking at the photo, I would say OS A320, new colors.

But after reading the text: "Indian Airspace in 2003", I doubt it. Perhaps BR076 you made this photo later and somewhere over Europe or it is another airline. It`s a A320 for sure.

Hi Oldeuropean, I made that picture indeed in 2003 but read my reply 11 , It was way before Indian airspace I think. Sorry  ashamed

Except that if it were the new colors we would see some contract between the fuselage and the engines. There is absolutely no indication of any blue. Unless it's just the light. Plus, when did Austrian new colors come out? Has it already been two years?!

Yup, definetly Austrian. You can clearly see the white stripe from the tail. Though it's kinda hard to see the blue bottom/engines cuz of the brightness...

I don't know now...the white doesn't look like a band...but rather a fuzzy piece of text, like Indian Airlines.

Wow, this one is a toughy!

No doubt it's Austrian.

The reason it's not Indian: on the Indian airbus the tail has a white letter, while on the Austrian airbus, it has a full white stripe, LIKE IN THE PHOTO.

The bottom of the Indian aircraft is grey as well, and as you can cleary see in the photo, the fuselage is solid white, like AUSTRIAN.

How is this even questionable?

Austrian A320. Maybe you took it somehwere else, that's why you think it's strange that it's a 320, but no way it's a triple-seven, and it's also the noew color scheme, I don't see any blue there.

AFAIK the OS 310s were not even flying in 2003.
And I'm quite sure it can't be a OS 320.
So even if it looks like a OS a/c in old colors I don't think it is.

It's a wet-leased Concorde, originally operated by NW to replace their DC-9's - now operated by merged Virgin-BMI on LTN-SIN run. Unfortunately not a money-spinner due to competition from Ryanair Longhaul.

The plane is actually 100% Eurowhite - it only looks like it has colours because cleaning has been sub-contracted to Air France.

How can you say it's Indian Airlines? Indian Airlines has a red tail with a little IA on it. It is Austrian A320 in new colors.

guys,...

the poster of this thread already said that it was most probably NOT taken in india but on the way from AMS to BKK...
so there's a lot of time for an austrian A320 -which is DEFINITIVELY the plane on the above picture - to cross the fotographers lens...

so stop asking what an A320 of OS is doing in india.
thats one of the things i hate most about the forums... something is already clear and then some wise (no offense!!) comes with 'the solution', probably without even reading the other posts...
if you don't bother reading the replies, don't bother writing at all!

sorry, i just had to say this once, it has bothered me so many times... and it's not against anyone, just a reminder to all of us to check whether we are adding information, or just repeating stuff...
