Bristol Airport Takes Off

Sun May 22, 2005 10:18 am

Not being a resident in South West England I only get to see snap-shots of BRSs activity every few years. But WOW, last time I sat and over looked the airport was 5 years ago, at best 4 or 5 aircraft to see, a few DHC8s in BA colours, a Ryanair 737 and the odd A320 charter. Passenger numbers in the order of 2 million in 2000.

Last week, in the space of 15 minutes I saw 8 movements, 2 Air Southwest DHC-8s, 2 FlyBE DHC-8s, 2 easyjet 737s, a First Choice A320 and a BA ERJ-145. At best there were 13 airliners on the ramp/runway. I see daily 757 Continental flights to New York started 2 days ago and passenger numbers are expected to top 5 million for this year.

Is this a record for expansion of a British airport?, if so keep it up  Smile

It's a great little airport too. I flew in and out several times in the mid-late 90s and the old airport was awful. Then (in 1999?) the new terminal opened and it was a vast improvement. Good on them!

I think Newcastle had the biggest expansion last year, but I don't know about the last 5 years. It really is great that there is so much service, mostly at reasonable prices. Take BA 10 years ago on the BRS-GLA route - £300 was typical fare as they had a monopoly on the route and could charge what they liked. Now easyJet compete directly (often with similar departure times) and the fares are now often around £60 for both airlines.

Is EWR now the farthest destination? Maybe one of the charters to the Canaries?

Nice to see it that way...

Yep, I lived in Bath and I really appreciated being able to fly into Europe (AMS and BRU) without having to drive to LHR. (I should perhaps explain that I flew on KLM CityHopper and DAT/Sabena before the days of EasyJet. No doubt there are many more European routes now.)

BRS is only 1.5 hours from where my family live (and where I was born and raised) so it is convenient. EXT is, however, even more convenient, at about 1 hour from where they live.

BRS' terminal is nice, easy to navigate, etc.

BRS-EWR is getting on for twice the distance of any Canaries flights, so there's no question there.

The Canaries are only about 1/2 of the distance to EWR! So yes, I'd say that EWR is the farthest destination...

Yes I used to live in Bristol and have flown out many times from the new Terminal and it is great. If only some other smaller airports could develop in the same way.

It's quite a challenge for some aircraft as the 6500ft Rw doesn't give a huge Acellerate/ Stop distance

Yes i wish my local airport at Cardiff would grow like Bristol - too close to Bristol is a bit of a problem. Hopefully the new Zoom flights to Canada out of CWL will help other airlines to decide to come in?

Doh, I didn't finish the sentence! Should have read:

I flew to/from BRS last month and I liked the airport, it's quite small for the number fo flights/pax that go through at the moment, but no doubt they will expand.

Rumours in the crew room at Astraeus are that we'll be continuing our successful Banjul charters this Winter (much longer than the Canaries!!) and adding a weekly flight to Taba in Egypt.
