TPA Airside D Closure

Mon May 23, 2005 3:34 am

On the TPA homepage today in the Flight Info section (May 22, 2005), I noticed B6 and FL are now at Airside A (B6 using gate A12, FL using A16, A17, A18). When did Airside D close and when will the demolition of Airside D occur?

It closed last week. Wednesday or Thursday I think.
From what I have read they are going to leave it standing until it needs to be torn down for operational purposes. Dont quote me on that though  Wink
B6 only got one gate? They have like 3 originators. I would have at least thought they would get 2 gates. Who is occuping gates 14 and 15?

I heard the same thing. D will stand until the space is needed. I cannot believe that B6 only got one gate either. I would think they would be using three of them real soon.

I checked the gate locations around noon on the TPA Flight Info. I'd imagine B6 would indeed occupy gates A14 and A15 for RON only and primarily use A12, similar to when they were at Airside D using gates D48 and D49 for RON and primarily used D50. B6 overnights two JFK-bound aircraft and one BOS-bound aircraft. I'll check later tonight when TPA posts gate assignments for tomorrow's flights. Thanks for the info.

A sad day in the history of TPA. The last of the original concourses in the 1971 terminal has now closed. I guess the next time I visit Tampa I won't even recognize TPA  cry  .

With the opening on new airsides, TPA is becoming a better and more beautiful airport. I have always loved TPA, but those old airsides were the only negative thing about it. Now they are being replaced with brand new, spacious and modern airsides that will only strengthen its position as the best airport in America.

When I came into TPA this morning B6 had their mark on 3 gates in the A concourse.

I'm sure the new airsides are beautiful pieces of architecture and are stocked with all the finest amenities, shops, restaurants, displays, etc. I'm also sure they will continue to keep TPA at the head of the class when it comes passenger surveys of favorite airports.

However, there are those of us that surf this web-site that have a great appreciation for the yesterday of air travel, for the airport architecture and service that basically laid the foundation for where the industry is today.

As an aside, TPA led in positive passenger surveys long before any of the airsides were even considered for reconstruction.

Yeah, but progress happens.

I fly CO and like the airside they share with NW, southwest very much. you can sit in cramped, amenityless airsides if you want for nostalgia's sake. maybe they should just leave it open as a nostalgia lounge? Or make it the smoker's lounge, if you really want the 70s travel experience. That way they could kick the smokers out of the outdoor terrace off of the main terminal.

I gotta agree with Tom,

same reason I like 727, 737-200, DC-9, L-!011, DC-10...
not this NG Airbus A320 family crap.

You couldn't beat the old Airside E.

Hey, this isn't such a bad idea... An airside that we could visit without having to have an airline ticket...

It could be converted into a museum showing that history of TPA... Not gonna happen, but wishful thinking...

I liked the old airside D, I flew out of there several times on TW to STL.

I just wish STL's concourses looked anything remotely like it.

The old airside E was the best. The second level waiting areas and the lower level boarding areas; sitting at the end of the airside watching the action on 18R/36L. It didn't get any better than that.

TW actually flew out of the old Airside C. The inside appeared similar to Airside D, but the exterior was different. That makes me wonder, was TW scheduled to move into Airside E prior to the merger with AA? They would have needed to move since Airside C was closed in 2002.

I spent hours upon hours in the old "E" as a child.
I remember thinking I was about the only kid in the world who loved airplanes. Then I met this other kid who was toting around a shoulder bag COMPLETELY covered with tags from airlines all over the world. He was taking pictures of the airplanes too. We started to talk and stayed together the rest of the day walking the airport and spotting. Good times. Unfortunately he lived south in Dania Florida (I think. It's been many years) We exchanged addresses and corresponded for a while. Eventually lost touch though. I wonder what ever happened to him? He was the first person that ever taught me how to tell the difference between different series of aircraft. At that point I didn't even know they came in series! LOL!
Too bad. My childhood memories are slowly being demolished as the airsides are torn down. One by one.....  weeping

I know it is sad to see these airsides being demolished...but guys...you just have to be impressed with the new airsides. I remember the first time I walked into Airside A back in the day...wow...I was so impressed! It's something refreshing...its progress! The same thing happened with Airside E, Airside C, and soon, Airside D.
