Cheap Fares In US - East Coast?

Mon May 23, 2005 7:41 pm

Hey all....

I'm from Australia and want to buy some internal legs in the US.

Specifically NY (all airports) to BOS

BOS to YYZ

Can anyone suggest a good online booking engine, or alternatively some discount US airlines that serve the east coast US or Canada?

Any help would be appreciated!

Many thanks

Of the sites listed above, go with SideStep and/or Kayak, and Mobissimo.com as they scour not only the airline websites, but also the major online travel sites as well. Using them is a good place to start, as sometimes you can actually get a better deal on an airline's website.

Unfortunately, none of the East Coast discount airlines offer nonstop flights between NYC and BOS. The majors pretty much have NYC-BOS for themselves for the time being. AirTran would require flying LGA-PHF-BOS or LGA-CAK-BOS; Southwest would require a routing of ISP-BWI-MHT.

The same holds true for BOS-YYZ. None of the East Coast LCCs fly transborder (Although B6 and FL have been rumored for the future), leaving your options out of BOS limited to AC and American Eagle.

Most US websites require you to have a US address that your creditcard is billed to.

You say you're in Australia... you do know that you can book your flights internally with ANY travel agency within Australia don't you? They will be able to issue the ticket for you... You see US airlines go on published rates.. whatever is discounted will show on the above websites, just as they will be displayed on your australian travel agent's computer reservation systems.

FYI - the route you want NYC-BOS-YYZ is flown by AA. So maybe you could look into www.aa.com . However do remember that it's cheaper sometimes to buy return tickets than oneways. If you need to just do that as a oneway, ask about the VUSA fares from your Australian travel agencies.

NYC-BOS is a shuttle market (Delta Shuttle/US Airways Shuttle). You may be able to get some good fares on these flights at the off-peak times.

Amtrak may be another option; perhaps by the time you go their high-speed Acela trains will be running again.

I have routinely found good deals through SideStep, Travelocity, Orbitz, and the random local travel agent. A few words of caution though...

Being extremely flexible with your dates is probably the best way to save on airfare, but no matter what you're willing to sacrifice you can't always get a great deal, no matter how hard you try. And if you're ever in a position where you have to arrive at a specific location on a specific date, chances are you'll be paying the big bucks. There's just not many ways to name your own date and your own price. In the end you'll be lucky to have one or the other.

I believe you can get discounted off peak advanced purchase (usually 21 days) flights on the US and DL shuttles between LGA (LaGuardia) and BOS. Also, CO serves between EWR and BOS and with advance purchase, you can get cheaper, off peak fares. best to check the respective airlines websites.

As to BOS-YYZ, that may be more limited as to choice of airlines as going to Canada, a separate country. Also, Canada has very high taxes and fees on airline fares. Go to the website for Boston airport for airlines that serve between BOS-YYZ.
By the way, make sure your visa covers Canada and to reenter the USA if you plan to re-enter the USA.
