Maintenance Of AI Aircraft

Air India was the hot topic of discussion at a recent family gathering when one of the attendees made a comment about poor maintenance of AI airplanes. I pointed out that given AI's safety record, their maintenance standards must be very strict and meet all international standards.

I would request the informed members of this forum to comment on what they know of/think of AI maintenance facilities and standards. I remember reading a while ago that all AI maintenance facilities are ISO9002 certified.

The interiors (fabrics, seat cushions, carpeting, bulkhead covers, etc) on Air India aircraft are very tatty and downright shoddy.

This often gives passengers the impression that the aircraft itself is in less than perfect flying condition.

It is an incorrect assumption, but when you are in the transportation/service sector industry, image and perception are everything. It is a pity that Air India's managers can't understand that basic truism.

Good point! I can give you some information why the perception might be biased. We base our information on the media (tailstrike here, fuselage loss there): now, we have to be aware

- that India has a free press: every thing is taken up by the media

- Civil Aviation is a state-matter and highly politized.. meaning, nearly every delay reaches the media

Let's try to make a comparison: do you think that these things don't happen with other airlines? and do you think the case is as elaborately scrutinized in Chinese Media for the case of China, in African media in the case of African Airlines (any poblems with Cameroon Airlines, Air Burundi etc?),, in Pakistani Media for the case of Pakistan, even in European media for the case of European airlines (the latter probably not, as Civil Aviation is rather privately driven)?

LH Technik would not cooperate with AI maintenance if they were shabby. And you brought it up yourself: ISO 9002 is not awarded without reason.

One can citicize AI for many things (management, ground-handling) - but I cleary have the position that AI (and IC) have worldclass maintenance facilities.. some of the people in the so-callled developed world might not believe it and think I am crazy now  Wink

Seriously speaking, AI is well maintained in terms of its fuselage, engines, and essential components. But few, if any, passengers see this side of AI's operations. What most people see are the dated and torn seats, old style IFE in many cases and other cabin features.

Granted, a lot of U.S. airlines aren't exactly Rolls-Royce either.
Tort reform now. Throw lawyers in jail later.

True.
However, AI has the added burden of being a Third World airline, and, thus, saddled with an automatic poor reputation.
Which is why when JRD Tata was at AI's helm, he ensured that the face of the airline that passengers saw was all spit and polish. Which is why MSA, SIA's predecessor in the 60s and early 70s also did the same.
Delta and AF can get away with dirty planes, but AI and Jet cannot. Clearly, the former has yet to learn this lesson, while the latter has become the natural successor to JRD's vision for the Indian aviation scene.

These are all good points.

It seems to me, however, that recently AI is taking some effort in improving its image and in the quality of the product it delivers.

And not to throw all the blame on the passengers, but I think a lot of Air India customers could stand to be a little cleaner and conscientious when travelling AI. My sense is that many are more careful on board "foreign" airlines; but when on board India's flag carrier, they treat the aircraft with less respect.

Yes the Pax see the Aircraft Interiors & base their views.

BTW Seen "Shivaji" a couple of Nights back Taxing at Bom.Wasn't it involved in the Tail strike.Apart from a shining Aft of APU Section.How long was the repair time.
