B6 Starts JFK-BUR Today

Wed May 25, 2005 12:18 am

JetBlue starts 3 daily JFK-BUR today with a fourth starting 7/15/05! An exciting day as B6 will be the only airline flying nonstop from the east coast to BUR!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, JETBLUE

-- With new service into Bob Hope Airport, JetBlue becomes the first Airline to fly Nonstop from Burbank to New York City --

New York, NY (May 24, 2005) – JetBlue Airways [NASDAQ: JBLU] today launched its first nonstop flight to New York’s JFK International Airport from Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, CA, offering the first and only nonstop coast-to-coast service from the Southern California airport.

JetBlue plans three daily nonstop flights between Burbank and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport with a fourth to commence July 15, allowing the carrier to offer more daily nonstop flights to California from New York City than any other airline. Burbank will become JetBlue’s seventh California destination. In addition to its new service from Burbank, JetBlue currently offers two daily nonstop flights from Ontario and seven daily nonstop flights from Long Beach.

“The wait is finally over for nonstop service to New York from Burbank," said Dave Barger, President and COO of JetBlue Airways. With our new convenient service from Burbank complementing our existing nonstop service from Ontario and Long Beach, it’s no wonder our new advertising slogan is ‘LAX? Don’t even go there.’”

"JetBlue is coming here during the very week that Bob Hope Airport is celebrating its 75th Anniversary, and there couldn't be any better frosting on the cake than nonstop service to New York. This is certainly a time to remember the airport's marvelous history, but the arrival of JetBlue reminds us that Bob Hope Airport has a wonderful future ahead, too. We're all very pleased to welcome JetBlue to Burbank," said Charles Lombardo, President of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.

My mom lives about 20 minutes from BUR, and we have a lot of family in the NY area. It just amazes me that it has taken this long for BUR to get a flight like this. Great job, B6!

I spent the last 5 days working with B6's guerilla marketing campaign and folks in Socal are very excited about this new service.

LAX? Don't even go there.

They might want to rename LAX "James Hahn International Airport" after the soon to be former mayor. LAX is a mess and Hahn created a real mess. Sounds perfect to me.

It is too bad BUR is such an obsolete facility. It is convenient for Valley residents but parts of the main terminal were built by UA in 1930 and are still in use. Seating and concessions are extremely limited, there is inadequate counter space, not enough gates and no jetways.

During a strong Santa Ana wind condition, it is unlikely that a fully loaded A320 can get to JFK without a fuel stop. I blame the NIMBYs.

Burbank is restricted.

I have a great view of the landing path of BUR from my living room. I live at about 300 feet on the north face of the Hollywood hills in the valley. I can see the jets approach from the west and lose them right as they touch down. Also, any coming from the south will come over my house at a northwest direction, then bank into the landing path. (here comes one now...)

I'll take some pics on a clear day.

I'm also in the flight path for Van Nuys, a GA airport directly under the path for BUR. Get all sorts of loud private jets into there.

Not sure why Santa Anas would make takeoff harder, just have to fly into it. As for the heat, it's no worse than LAS or phoenix or Ontario, etc.

The airport is outdated, but Burbank has some nice areas.

Burbank Media Center area is close and a nice little downtown. Likely your hotel is there.

You also aren't far from Universal Studios and City Walk (5 minute cab ride). Fun place to walk around at night and plenty of places to eat, with bowling and a big multiplex w/ IMAX to boot.

Actually, that is a runway length, heat and terrain problem, not a NIMBY problem. The NIMBY problem is the too close to the runway terminal that is grandfathered in and the too small facilities. Still, I hope that whenever they build a new terminal, they keep the airstairs.

Hey B6FA4ever!

How are you???

Just commuted home last night and turned on the news this afternoon only to see a segment on your new BUR service. The pax who were interviewed were excited about not having to drive so far to get to NY. Now if only we could start BUR-DEN service so I don't have to deal with the traffic on the 110!!! Ahh! I live about 15 minutes from BUR and I'm looking forward to jumpseating on you guys! You all have a loyal following here in L.A. I hope you enjoy your BUR layovers!  Smile Cheers!

I am so glad we now have BUR as a destination (31). Now people near BUR don't have to drive to LAX, or even ONT and LGB to catch a flight.

Any pictures are welcome of jetBlue At BUR (lol i am jetBlueAtJFK and that is jetBlueAtBUR.lol..i laugh at myself here).

Hopefully one day the plane either diverts to BUR and you can work a flight or 2 out of there or maybe the will need you up there in BUR.

So they already had 2 flights go in and out, how are things going. I see that the first flight of the day went to gate A7 and then the others went to their gate A9.What is that about?

not unless they can free up more slots. with alaska, southwest, ua, hp, delta, aa in there, it's pretty full. maybe UA will have to trim down their services, or aa, in the future and B6 can get more slots.

though personally I'd like to see CO get in there with two EWR and two IAH flights a day. sorely needed...

there are no slots at burbank, stop saying that, bur has no flight restrictions like long beach. jetblue is rumored to eventually take 2-3 gates in bur, A7-A9, sharing A7 with swa once a day.

B6 wont be sharing with WN, B6 will use gates A8 and A9 while WN uses A1-A4, A6, and when we change flight schedules we will use A7. BTW, America West uses A5.

BUR does have restrictions on flights due to limited gates and constant legal battles with Burbank. The number of flights is basically fixed, though obviously when airlines like JetBlue and SouthWest fly there, they turn planes around faster, which allows for more planes per day per gate.

I would assume for CO to fly there they would need access to 1 gate, and thus would need another airline to give up the gate. that's why I offered up AA or UA, as either might be a candidate. Doubt southwest or alaska will give any up, and even as merged, US won't give up America West's gate access either.

Bookings are being capped at 135. However on the day of the flight the actual allowable count can change depeding on temperatures and winds.
Will be interesting to see how the flight performs in during mid/late summer as temperatures can average 90 plus degrees.

Those are extremes. I was mentioning averages and what one can use for planning. Certainly 100 degree weather is possible, but the average to be expected is significantly less.

As you can see the peak average high temperature is 90.14 Fahrenheit experienced during July and August. June is 83.3 and September 87.4

swabur, dumb question, but do fly swa or work for swa in bur? i opened the bur station 4/16/90 with swa and was their youngest employee ever at the time, herb took me to lunch at the burbank hilton. greg golden was our station mgr when we opened with 10 oak flights and 6 las flights, we used gate A5 in bur at the time which swa built with a jetway, the only at the time in bur, but later it was torn out.

just telling you how it's been the last few years out here in summer. crazy hot, 100+ for weeks, then 90s for weeks. Las Vegas type heat in Burbank, Universal City, Van Nuys, etc. we did have one summer that wasn't as hot, but most have been above the norm since 2000 (along with rolling blackouts a few years back), setting records and such.

we just had a nice 4 days of 90+ this past week. Friday was the peak at 98, same saturday, sunday low 90s, monday started to cool again.

I hope things go back to normal and we average those nice 90 degree highs this summer. Big grin

yeah, it would cause problems when us canceled an oak or las flight, and pax wanted to come over to swa, but the two airlines didnt have an agreement, so last minute, we always sold tickets to get people out. on the flip side, us would offer meal service on flights that short back in that time, they even at one time had an hourly shuttle bur-sfo, they had flights to phx, las, oak, sjc, smf, and rno out of terminal B. we still had twa at the time, alaska, delta, ua and ua express, delta connection, i cant remember who else, oh yeah, duh, america west

Excellent...yes PSA was Burbank for a long time....miss the smilies but glad at least the service is still there in another form. Texans in CA....who would have guessed?...LOL.

An hourly shuttle along with LAX-SFO...that's pretty good. BUR is a nice alternative to LAX though. I've yet to see the airport..have to do a day trip out there.

BUR has what, a 6800 foot runway? It certainly can't be any worse (from an operational standpoint) than SNA, with only 5700 feet.

Yes, 6886ft. to be exact. The problem is getting a poor performing airbus in hot temps. all the way to JFK.

I don't mean to rain on B6 (personally I like them allot), but I'd be willing to bet JFK-BUR flights don't last for more than a year due to the weight restrictions. If flights are capped at 135 they would really need a premium on those seats to make up for the lost revenue. Add to that the eventual fuel stops that will occur when the Santa Ana winds hit and I bet you'll see an eventual BUR-LAS-JFK route development. Those of us who've worked airline operations in BUR know that an A320 is not the ideal aircraft for this route.

For those who don't know BUR is a very restricted airport when it comes to aircraft performance being limited by runway length, weather and geography. The runway may be longer than SNA but remember that SNA is near the coast so temperatures don't get as hot as they do in the valley. The reason Santa Ana winds are so bad is that they come from the north which means that airlines have to use runway 33. That runway is on a slope, more than 80 feet in elevation difference from runway 33 to 15, so it definitely affects performance.

BUR has what, a 6800 foot runway? It certainly can't be any worse (from an operational standpoint) than SNA, with only 5700 feet.

The biggest issue with BUR is climb and engine out performance due to proximity to high terrain.

The problem isn't JFK-BUR as much, it's BUR-JFK.

Well good news for B6 and BUR. Its great to see BUR expanding in service. But as a passenger I love how easy it is to get in and out of the airport. Before booking my flights to BUR I use to fly into LAX. I finally got tired of having to deal with the madness of getting into and out of the airport, and also my parents live in the valley so why deal with the 405 bumper to bumper crap. I've been flying into BUR for the last year and I absolutely love it!
