New "Air Italy" Looks Like AF!

Wed May 25, 2005 10:11 am

Same design, different colors; a touch too similar to the French carrier. Couldn't they be more original? Looks like AF owns an interest the carrier.

Airline will start operations tomorrow MXP - IST

Yes it looks very similar to AF's livery.

I've never even heard of this airline, can someone give me some info on them? When will they start operations? What routes will they fly? What kind of airline are they?

Quoting Squirrel83 (Reply 1):
Why does it have a German Reg?

Because it was manufactured in Hamburg and will have a German Reg until Air Italy accepts delivery.

Likewise, Boeing aircraft are flown in U.S. registration until delivery and Tolousee aircraft fly with French registration until delivery.

Since when was the Boeing 757 manufactured in Hamburg?

The logo under the airline name at the front of the aircraft is identical to the Air France logo, with the short parallelograms and such. And yes, the tail is identical. Anyone have definite information on whether or not AF has influenced this operation and how much?

I think it's one of them knock off airlines, like those cheap Rolex you'd find at flea markets.

Air France --> Air Italy

Come on now... Hopefully they have an affiliation of some sort... It would be pathetic if Air Italy wasn't.

My recommendation : fire the marketing manager!!

Your choice of words threw people off  Wink - maintained would have worked tho.

It's a (previously) German-owned aircraft being maintained and painted in Germany - until Air Italy accepts delivery, it remains a German-registered aircraft.

Back to the original topic - it's a very cheap copy of AF.
They tried to mask it by putting Air Italy on the engines, how nice.
But look at the logo under "Air Italy" wow. lol

I can't seem to find a website for them yet?
http://www.airitaly.it/ - under construction
that's as close as I got, and it doesn't have any hint of being their site except the URL.

I was just wondering if it looked a little like this

Google translation of
www.ansa.it/main/notizie/awnplus/economia/news/2005-05-21_381452.html

"Transports: Air Italy is born
First flight the 25/5 in occasion of Milan-Liverpool (HANDLE) - ROME, 18 MAG - calls Air Italy the new created airline charter from Kind Giuseppe commander, on the model of the old Air Europe. The first flight, Milan-Instanbul, e' previewed for 25 May, in occasion of the game of Champions League Milan-Liverpool. Owners of the company are the financial institution Marchin Investments BV (40%) that ago same head to the Kind one, the society English financial institution BVMS Limited (40%) and the lussemburghese financial institution Pathfinder Knows (20%)."

However, I do not see too many similarities...

The fuselage is white. Okay, that's nothing unusual.

The stripes (number, thickness) on the tail are different. The colours may be the same as AZ, but can that really be a surprise? Let's think... what did the Italian flag look like again??

Also, with AF the stripes are limited to the tail, here they extend downwards.

The typeface is different.

I don't see the parallelogram on the AF plane. I do see them on the AF website though. Again, different number.

My guess, a very unimaginative livery "inspired" by what the designer probably considered a great livery - that of AF.

If I were head of this company, the first thing I would have said to those who conjured this livery is: "No way, it smacks of Air France! ... Go back to the drawing board."

I think they extended the tail logo to the fuselage to keep them disticnt, but it just doesn't work. In any case, I think they could have been more imaginative.

"Its nice to fly with friends again" ... 'Again'? I don't quite understand that slogan. When did we fly with friends before? Any ideas?

The titles on the tail remind me of the old Air Europa titles!

Kinda of a AF/AZ livery!

Any idea what routes they plan, are they a charter airline?

No its a rather compicated story. As of what I remeber, Alitalia combiens Ala and Italia, Ala meaning wings. So its a rather nice combination

Another hyporthesis is that in Italian Al Italia means "to Italy" so one can think that taking an AZ flight will take you Al Italia

Whatever it is, it doesn't exactly translate into Air Italy

The website for the airline is not even working? It is still under construction. Give it a few months and their aircraft will be returned to the leasing company. Alitalia and Turkish already fly the route. Why is there a need for yet another airline in the market. All I can think is that this is someones idea at poking a hole into Alitalia. What a mess.

You got it. The airline builds on the ex Air Europe charter model. Remember Air Europe used to be owned by a UK Travel company. They had an airline in the UK called Air Europe, one in Italy called Air Europe and one in Spain called Air Europa. All three had the exact same livery. Then the UK travel company decided to spin off each airline as stand alone airlines in their respective countries. Air Europe in England went bankrupt, Air Europe Italy changed the livery and introduced the first 777 to Italy flying to Havana on weekly schedules, and Air Europa in Spain kept its original livery. Air Europe Italy was bought by Swissair so was Volare. Swissair merged both Volare and Air Europe into one company. Air Europe at that point offered scheduled traffic within Italy. When Swissair folded, Volare became Volareweb and then went bankrupt as well. Now a former Captain at Air Europe formed Air Italy based on the original Air Europe charter business.

Never happens anywhere else, oh wait skyteam association will be the reason for this one?

Yes the paint jobs have similarities but are we going to say the new house colors of Airbus are too similar to UTA's? While not exactly the same, similar?

Where will Air Italy be flying to, and when?

I like the tail, if the titles were bigger in the front of the fuselage it might look better and distract from the fact it does resemble the scheme of AF.

If you look at that logo/stripe on the forward fuselage, I'm sure I've seen the same thing on an AF ad, with the green part blue.

Not strictly true. Air Europe SpA (Italy) and Air Europa were actually only minority owned by the ILG (International Leisure Group) and 100% owners of Air Europe in the UK. This avoided issues with local ownership. The ILG went bust in March 1991 taking Air Europe in the UK with it. Air Europa and Air Europe SpA's assets were bought out locally and carried on trading. The ILG did not spin them off.

Air Europe's slogan was "It's nice to fly with friends". This came from a competition run but the then fledgling carrier in the late '70s (just after it was formed) and won by one of their employees.

Do you know where this 757 originally comes from ? It is not an ex-Condor aircraft hence the german reg ??

This has already been discussed a couple of times.
Names are similar, both - Air France and Air Italy planes have wings, engines, cockpits. But nothing else "similar" to find.

Sorry, Paul, there is a difference between a dirty plane and a plane that looses paint. Everybody laughing about dirty AF planes, but the DL plane is in a really awful condition.
