MDW Gate Questions

I just have a question, why were gates A4A/B built? With C8 closed now, that just relocates two gates. Gates A6/A8 had jetways at one point and now these gates aren't being used. ATA started using A10 again but what about A6,A8? When A6,A8 were being used what kind of a/c was able to use them?

A6 and A8 can accommodate the 738 and lower. I don't believe that I've ever seen a 757 parked down there as it is a tight fit and the tugs have a hard time backing the aircraft out.

To respond to your question about gates A4A and A4B, they were originally planned and built when ATA had much bigger plans for Midway. As the bankruptcy has let to a drastic reduction in their operations, the additional gate space really isn't as necessary as it once was; Southwest now leases six of the fourteen gates originally leased by ATA.

Gates A4A and A4B were also useful when the A Concourse from A8 and up was being built. The way the new Midway was built over the old Midway, the end of the A concourse was the last area built. Gates A4A and A4B were put up some time before this.
