New RDU - SLC Service DL

Thu May 26, 2005 5:43 am

New Non-stop Service to
Salt Lake City, Utah

Delta Airlines now offers daily non-stop service to Salt Lake City (SLC) — the first non-stop flight between RDU and Salt Lake City — linking RDU's growing market to Delta's hub and cities in the west. From Salt Lake City, you can head to more than 50 western destinations including Alaska and Hawaii.

I think its just weird to see more Delta at RDU period. . . with NEW US Airways on the east I think other airlines are weary of what will happen . . . .

Is that with 738 or 733? What is DL's presence in RDU like?

It's operated with a 737-800. Begins on June 1st.

What? No RJ? Has DL gone MAD? I can't remember the last time DL opened a new domestic market that didn't involve Song or DLX....

738 in dual class.. not single.. DL is not crazy enough to not have FC out of RDU..

From RDU, DL offers Nonstop to ATL (11 daily), CVG (8 daily), BOS (4 daily), JFK (3 daily), LGA (4 daily), FLL (5 daily), TPA (2 ->3 daily), MCO (6 daily), MSY (2 daily), SLC (0 -> 1 daily)...

SLC-FAI
SLC-OGG
SLC-RDU (begins 6/1)
ATL-BOI (begins 6/1)

I could be wrong, but I remember hearing that the RDU-SLC flights will eventually be on E170's when they come in.

I could be wrong though.

They must be planning on making it 3x daily then.. otherwise that would be a huge drop in seats.. from 150 to 70... but it would be cool to see/ride the E70s.. wouldn't bother me a bit

In recent news, Delta Connection carrier, SkyWest has announced it is finally starting overseas service from SLC on the new CRJ-200XXLR from SLC to LGW

On a serious note, it is good to see DL adding new markets from SLC

I would be very happy to see some E-170s around, but DL would have just one destination from SLC with the E-170? It wouldn't fit in with all the CRJs around  Wink

Perhaps it will be part of the rotation of E70s that will be at RDU. We have a potential of seeing a couple (or more) of our destinations go to E70 from CRJ (FLL, MCO, TPA, MSY, BOS, JFK)

Delta actually seems to be cutting SLC mainline flights after initially expanding earlier this year. After the January 31 schedule overhaul they had 112 nonstop departures. Looking at the May schedule it is down to 100.

That's just what DL needs, another RJ crammed at gate 17. They already remote 2 over at GearBuck and park 5 RONs at gate 17. They sure would like to get FL's gate 18, but they aren't budging.

Congrats RDU, this will be good after unfortunately losing your DEN service.

Timetable tells a different story. By looking at the schedule from February 1st and from May 1st, mainline flying only went from 114 to 109, a loss of a mere 5 mainline flights. At the same time, 27 RJ and EM2 flights have been added. The changes are likely coming from the CAL routes, where several 733 flights have been replaced 1-to-1 with CRJs, namely at LAX, SMF, SFO, and ONT, and MSP had one loss as well. Then some minor adjustments to ATL, CVG and LAS, and you have the reason for the reduction.

I found 110 mainline flights for this July. That was just from going through the schedules.

The small reduction comes as a result of the suspension of seasonal ski and winter destinations.

From my understanding, FL is supposed to move to A24 and DL is supposed to take A19.. althought it was supposed to happen sometime in March.. I thought it was still a go-go.. RDUAA can't just be holding on to 3 empty gates for no reason.. something has to be done or something has to be up..

Thanks for correcting me on the current gate assignment, ERJ. FL currently has A19, RDUAA wants them to take over A24 which was vacated by US so that DL can have more room for it's RJ operations. Supposedly, RDUAA is charging a mint for that gate to pay for the new jetway they just installed there. FL is refusing to relocate at that price and from what I understand, has gone to DL to see if they would offset some of the costs. I don't think that is going to go anywhere, so we are at status quo for right now.

Hmm.. from what I understood, the jetway at A24 (as well as the jetway at HP gate) was replaced with funds from the Hurricane that went through.. there shouldn't be any need for anyone to pay for them..

Depends on if the jetway is owned, leased or paid per use. If another airline is using another airlines jetway then they will pay for it as will an airline using the airports jetway regardless who owns what.

The jetway that was there previously was owned by US. In January RDUAA told them to remove the jetway as well as vacate their maintenance building next to A28. The jetway that was there prior to the installation of the new bridge was in perfect working condition. The WN gate at A26 was damaged due to straight line winds and replaced at the end of last year .

Some jetways at RDU are owned by the airlines, the newer ones are owned by RDUAA. RDUAA is moving towards owning all the jetways when they become available.

At $30,000.. RDUAA shouldn't be tacking on too much to the rent cost to pay for the jetway.. unless they are trying to pay for it in a year.. but anyway, I predict DL will move to Terminal C (as they are supposed to when the reconstructed terminal opens) and get the 6 gates it want. With AA decreasing flights, DL could easily swoop in and gets some gates. To me, the most valuable gate in Terminal C is 16..

Well, the SLC service starts today (01Jun05).. anyone know how well the loads are looking for the flight?

Does it initially seem to be successful for today/subsequent days?

For tomorrow it looks like the Jet is just about full only a couple seats left.
This will be the only service from NC to SLC.
