Delta Connection To Base E170s At Columbus

Thu May 26, 2005 8:52 pm

While talking to an Embraer 170 captain flying the United Express side a week ago, he mentioned that Republic had already begun the process of setting up a crew base in Columbus to serve Delta Connection's new E170 program. Rumors have been flying locally that Delta will use the new jets to start the long-anticipated CMH-SLC service, twice daily. The Columbus Dispatch released an article this morning confirming the news, reporting that Republic will spend $17 million and create 98 new maintenance jobs at CMH for the E170 program. Here are highlights from the article:

An aviation company’s $17 million expansion at Port Columbus is expected to create 98 jobs and bring new regional jet service to more locations.
Republic Airways Holdings of Indianapolis plans to expand its maintenance operation for Republic Airlines, a new subsidiary that is expected to start flying in August.

*I assume they mean the Delta Connection side will begin flying in August, since Republic is already up and running as United Express.*

Republic Airlines would fly 70-seat jets for Delta, but neither Republic nor Delta would discuss details.
"All that would be speculative at this time,’’ Delta spokesman Anthony Black said. Delta is the largest carrier at Port Columbus.
David Whitaker, airport vice president of business development, said Port Columbus officials have talked with Delta "about new markets to serve and have presented some opportunities that I know they are considering.’’
He said the airport pitched markets that have passenger demand and fit with Delta’s flight patterns, such as Jacksonville and West Palm Beach, Fla.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Salt Lake City.

Chautauqua has a maintenance operation at 4300 E. 5 th Ave. with 277 mechanics, pilots and flight attendants. Republic would renovate 120,000 square feet at 4106 E. 5 th Ave. to expand, said Warren Wilkinson, Republic’s vice president of government affairs.

No surprise, seeing that CMH is home to CHQ's main maintenance facility. However, I seriously doubt all 16 EMB-170s will be bases there. They more than likely will be used for CMH-SLC, as a replacement for ERJs to Florida, and perhaps to CVG as well.

I wonder why they did not select COMAIR for this? Seems a logical choice for DL since they are already in CMH and have 70 seat CRJ's coming on line.

Ever since Delta was burned a few years ago by the strike at Comair, they have spread out their flying between the DL Connection carriers. In several markets you will see more than one connection carrier providing flights. This way flight service to a major city will not be totally wiped out should a strike or shut down occur as it did even last December. Good safety net for DL.

Adding to what Pbiflyer correctly said, CHQ is also alot cheaper than Comair, especially the pilots  Wink . Plus, Comair has hardly any presence at CMH, with only a few flights to CVG. CMH is Chautauqua-territory.

Isn't Comair getting the E70s though? Are those going to be based out of CVG, JFK, MCO, or GSO?

This order has yet to be confirmed and so far is nothing more than a rumor. If OH were to get them, bases would be CVG (d'uh!) and likely JFK as well.

Comair is supposed to get 25 additional 70 seaters as part of the pay freeze package. However, it is yet to be decided if those 70 seaters will be CRJ's or E170's.

From a customer service perspective, the E170 is a superior aircraft. However, from a cost perspective, the CRJ700 will be cheaper to acquire and maintain. Bombardier is willing to offer extremely attractive financing (because they are desperate to sell a dying CRJ line) and the CRJ700 is already in the DL fleet (fleet/maintenance/training commonality).

Hopefully, a decision will be made soon.

Actually, the United Express 170's are still being operated by the Chautauqua certificate right now. The republic certificate is still not finalized. From what I have been told from pilots at the company, the UAL 170's will be going on the Shuttle America certificate and the Delta flying will be going on the Republic certificate when that finally arrives.

It has been decided, it just hasn't been announced. It was decided back in Feb.

It looks like the first announced route will be loaded tomorrow. This is slated to begin Sep. 1 on a route presently serviced by mainline flights.
There will likely be a route started sooner (Aug 1), but so far this is the only one that has been put to paper.

Some more information from Columbus Business First:

Warren Wilkinson, Republic Airways' vice president of government affairs and communications, said the carrier will begin serving Delta Air Lines from Port Columbus in August with 70-seat Embraer 170 aircraft. That will supplement the 50-seat Embraer jet service Chautauqua is already providing to Delta.

"Port Columbus is a large operation for us and an important part of our system," Wilkinson said.

He declined to identify the cities Republic would service under the Delta Connection banner with its 70-seat airplanes.

Republic Airways has increased its Embraer fleet from 83 aircraft in 2003 to 111 in 2004, including 39 flown for Delta.

In late 2004, Republic agreed it would acquire 16 of the 70-seat Embraers by mid-2006 so it can expand service to Delta.

"We have not made any specific announcement since then" about the use of the planes, said Delta spokeswoman Benet Wilson.

Delta and its regional affiliate will have 37 daily flights to 11 airports in July, she said.

Typically, airlines make public their schedules no sooner than two months in advance.

The rest of the article can be found at:

http://columbus.bizjournals.com/colu...bus/stories/2005/05/30/story7.html

Unless they're still updating the schedules online, I count 39 daily flights from CMH by Delta and affiliated carriers:

ATL: 5
CVG: 9
MCO: 5
TPA: 3
RSW: 2
FLL: 2
BOS: 3
BDL: 3
LGA: 3
JFK: 1
DCA: 3

Anyone at Delta have any further information?

I got 39 out of CMH and none are on the E70 (yet). So far only 1 E70 route has been announced, but it looks like the upload won't come until around June 11 now.

This might be my chance to finally get on the elusive E-170, and get Skyteam miles too! It seems like no matter what I try I can never make it work out for me on UA/US. Anyone with route information for the CMH based E170's yet??

From CMH, one can fly on the E170 to:

ORD: 3x a day on United Express operated by Chautauqua, soon to be Shuttle America, I presume.

PHL: 1x a day on USAirways Express operated by MidAtlantic Airways (increases to 2x daily in July and 3x in August, replacing mainline sadly).

The rumor still is Delta starting E170 runs to SLC from CMH starting in August. I assume we'll find out in the following few weeks. On a different note, Delta's current schedule has the 757 coming back in September, twice a day to ATL. Hopefully they stick around for the next schedule adjustment.

That's hardly a sad replacement. I'd be ecstatic.

I'd have to say it's a sad replacement, as there is no F cabin on there now...as an elite (US Silver), I'd rather take a 737 with a F cabin than any plane without one...that's part of the reason I try to avoid RJs and, in Delta's case, Song, as much as humanly possible.

A Good point, but I honestly think the seats on their 170s are closer to 737 first than 737 coach.

Nice to see they're coming back...how long can we expect them to stay? I'd much rather take a 757 to ATL than an MD-88.
