Frontier To DAY And FAT

Thu May 26, 2005 11:47 pm

I found schedules for DAY and FAT entered into Frontier's res system. Someone must have made a mistake because these flights have not been announced. Service is twice daily on CRJ700's. You can not see these flights on the first page of the website. You need to do a search for flight in Oct, then the city selections will move to the bottom left corner of the screen. Now you can change the cities and you will see DAY and FAT. I would add direct links but they are massive. Anyone have an idea when these will be announced? Great news for both cities. F9 seems to be following FL's lead in the Ohio markets.

Here is the link to the DAY service. Like I said the links are huge.

Fresno is in the drop-down box for "Advanced Search" on the Frontier website, and I was able to get results for a LGA-DEN-FAT R/T in October. Fares as low as $301 R/T.

No news item on Frontier's website, and nothing on the Fresno Bee's site either - last article mentioning Frontier and FAT was from Sep 2003.

This is great news!

Do they have enough RJs under contract to handle all of this new service or is service being dropped somewhere?

Good news, finally they may be saying yes.  cloudnine

FAT had a SCASD grant for $1 million that was offered to F9 for the last couple of years. This year they filed for a new grant for less money that would go to CoEx. If they got this year's grant they would return the F9 grant money to the Feds. Maybe that got Frontier to speed up their process.

Also in Travelocity right now. Looks like starting RT fares on FAT are $100 lower than anyone else. Looks like they start August 31.

I did a search of other express flights, and no cities are dropped. I found an article in Regional Aviation News that says Horizon will receive two CRJ's per year with eight on order, it doesn't say if they are coming this year or not. They would need two jets to add these services.

Regional Aviation News, May 23 2005

"Now in its fifth quarter of restructured operations, Horizon Air has become profitable, Jeff Pinneo, the carrier's president, said. One-quarter of Horizon's revenue now comes from a code-share agreement with Frontier Airlines [FRNT]. It is flying eight CRJ 700s for Frontier. Another quarter of Horizon's capacity has been devoted to "harmonizing" its routes with Alaska Air [ALK], its sibling carrier. Under the program, the routes are coordinated so the most appropriate aircraft are serving the routes for either the regional or mainline.

Horizon has eight more CRJ 700s on order with two per year scheduled for delivery. It has the option to convert each order into a CRJ 900 or a Q400 turboprop."

Yeah, but the $301 is LGA-FAT!
Next lowest price I could find on Orbitz was $474, but out of JFK.

The Frontier flights to FAT don't appear to be in Orbitz yet.

Damn, if F9 had these fares now, I would have flown to Fresno for Memorial Day weekend...they're re-opening Sierra Summit this weekend!

Yep, 1st Memorial Day weekend operation in its history. They still have 7 or 8 feet of snow. Free t-shirt if you are one of the first 100 people there each day. LOL

Check out the web cam at Sierra Summit

Tioga Pass through Yosemite is closed for another 3 or 4 weeks because they still have a 10 foot deep snow pack on the highway. What a winter.  cold

It seems like Frontier is going the way of AirTran here in the Midwest. Frontier recently announced service into Akron/Canton and Flint, both big AirTran strongholds, Dayton is the same. I was hoping to see those cool animal tails here in Columbus myself, looks like they missed by a hundred miles to the west and to the northeast...lol.

The Frontier/Hporizon jet Express fleet is working flat out, and no new CR7's are due to come in this year.

When Frontier started TUL last week-end, DEN/OMA went to mainline to free up the CR7's for that service.

So the question is, which cities will go to mainline to free up aircraft for DAY and FAT?

Mike Boyd didn't waste any time publicizing his part in helping Fresno get the new service.

Could BIL and BOI go mainline as a result of this? Both had service added by F9 (extra flights). I could see a possible A318 added.

BOI would be more likely than BIL, I think.

But Frontier has said that there is "resistance" to the CR7 in those cities that have both mainline and express. Those are AUS and SJC, so they may go all mainline there.

And I would guess ABQ is quite high on the list for all mainline service.

Mariner called it right. In this morning's FRNT conference call it was announced that ABQ would be converted to mainline service.

Also repeated by CEO Potter, F9 has no plans in the forseeable future to expand the RJ fleet operated by Horizon beyond the nine aircraft flying since last May.

Isnt America West/America West Express considered a "low cost" carrier? Because correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to send 3 or 4 planes to FAT a day....

It's interesting to me how Frontier always refers to themselves in press releases as a "low fare" airline when in fact they are merely a low cost airline. There's a big difference. Low costs, in this case, don't always equate to low fares. In most markets, there are many lower fare options. Just checking MCO-SEA, for instance, for 7/13-7/20 the lowest price I could find on F9 was $550. Much higher than almost every other airline, including nonstops on Alaska.

Alphascan,
Did they say what the schedule will be like in ABQ with the conversion to mainline service? They don't show the change in the reservations or schedules on their website. I would guess they would be down to three or four flights a day compared to the five CR7s.

Well it's about time!

It never ceases to amaze me when I hear about airlines falling all over themselves to expand out East, in slow-growth, heavily competitive markets, while steering clear of the wide-open opportunities available in places such as BFL, MOD, and FAT! (I have purposely left SCK out of the equation since sadly, until US99 and I5 become so congested it takes 2 hours to get to SMF....airline service there will remain a tough 'nut' to crack)

And by the way, yes, our Single A baseball team is indeed called, the "NUTS", as in, The "Modesto Nuts". (formerly the A's)
